About this policy
This policy explains what personal data Edutara collects through edutara.in, why it is collected, who it is shared with, how long it is kept, and the rights you have over it. Edutara handles personal data under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (the DPDP Act) and the rules made under it.
In the words of the DPDP Act, Edutara is the Data Fiduciary for this data, and you, the person the data is about, are the Data Principal. Where this policy says "we" or "us", it means Edutara.
You can ask to read this notice in English or in any language listed in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
1. What personal data we collect
We collect what you type into our forms, and the basic technical data any website receives when you visit it.
When you ask for a tutor
Your name, email address and phone number; whether you are a parent, a student or an adult learner; the learner's name if you are asking for someone else; the learner's class or exam, board and subjects; whether you want lessons at home, online or either; your city, state and locality; the language you prefer for lessons; anything you write in the message box; and the page you sent the form from.
When you apply to teach
Your name, email address, phone number, city and state; the subjects, classes, boards and exams you can teach; whether you can teach at home, online or both; your qualification and current occupation; anything you write in the message box; the page you sent the form from; and your confirmation that you do not currently teach in a school.
When you visit the site
Technical data such as your IP address, browser, device and the pages you open. Our hosting provider records some of this in its logs, and our forms use your IP address for a short time to block automated spam.
2. Why we use it
We use personal data only for the purposes below, which are the purposes you give it to us for.
Finding a tutor for you
Reading your request, looking for a tutor who teaches what you need, and contacting you about the tutor we find.
Arranging lessons
Sharing with a tutor we propose the details they need to decide whether they can teach the learner, and, once you agree to a trial lesson with that tutor, the contact details needed to arrange it.
Considering tutor applications
Reviewing your application, checking that you are eligible to teach through Edutara, and sending you an email with the next steps.
Keeping the match working
Staying in touch with families and tutors while lessons continue, and handling Edutara's own fees for families.
Payments
Edutara's own fees will be paid through a payment provider. Your card, bank or UPI details go to that provider, and Edutara keeps a record of the payment and of any tax invoice.
Keeping the site safe and working
Blocking spam and misuse, fixing faults, and understanding which pages people use.
Meeting legal duties
Keeping the records a law requires, such as tax records, and answering lawful requests from authorities.
We do not sell personal data.
3. Consent, and how to withdraw it
We process the personal data in our forms on the basis of your consent, which you give by ticking the consent box and sending the form.
What your consent covers
The purposes listed in section 2, for the data in the form you send. If we ever want to use your data for a new purpose, we will ask you first.
Withdrawing consent
You can withdraw your consent at any time, and doing so should be as easy as giving it. Once you withdraw, we stop processing your data and ask our service providers to stop too, unless a law requires us to keep it. Anything done lawfully before you withdrew stays lawful.
What happens next
Finding a tutor and considering an application both depend on your data, so after you withdraw consent we can no longer do either for you.
Uses the law allows without fresh consent
The DPDP Act allows some processing without separate consent, for example where a law requires us to keep or disclose data. We rely on these legitimate uses only where the Act permits them.
To withdraw consent, use the contact for requests and grievances at the end of this page.
4. Children's personal data
Many learners are under 18, and the DPDP Act treats everyone under 18 as a child.
A parent or guardian gives consent
If the learner is under 18, the request must come from a parent or lawful guardian, or with their verifiable consent. We may contact the parent or guardian to confirm this before we use the learner's details.
Only what the lessons need
For a child, we collect only the details needed to find a tutor and arrange lessons.
No tracking of children, no advertising aimed at them
We do not use a child's personal data for tracking or behavioural monitoring, and we do not direct targeted advertising at children.
Tutor applicants
Applicants who want to teach through Edutara must be 18 or older.
5. Who we share it with
We share personal data only where one of the purposes in section 2 needs it.
Tutors and families
A tutor we propose sees the parts of the request they need to decide whether they can teach it. When you agree to a trial lesson, the family and the tutor receive each other's contact details so they can arrange it.
Service providers
Companies that host this website and its database, send our emails and, when payments begin, process payments. They act on our instructions as Data Processors. Some of them may store or process data outside India, which the DPDP Act permits unless the Central Government has restricted transfers to that country.
Authorities
Government bodies, courts or regulators, when a law or a lawful order requires it.
6. How long we keep it
We keep personal data only as long as it serves the purpose you gave it for, or as long as a law requires us to keep it.
Requests and applications
Held while we look for a tutor, while lessons continue, or while your application is being considered. We erase them when that purpose is over or when you withdraw consent.
Records the law requires
Records such as invoices for Edutara's own fees are retained for as long as tax law requires.
Erasure by our providers
When we erase your data, we also ask our service providers to erase their copies.
7. How we protect it
We take reasonable security safeguards to prevent a personal data breach.
Encrypted connections
The site is served over HTTPS, so what you type into a form is encrypted on its way to us.
If a breach happens
We will inform the Data Protection Board of India and each person affected, as the DPDP Act requires.
8. Cookies
Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser.
Cookies the site needs
For example, a cookie that remembers which language you chose.
Analytics and advertising measurement
When analytics is switched on, the site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are used, and it may use Google Ads to measure whether an advertisement led to a request. These tools set their own cookies.
How you arrived
A cookie set by this site remembers the campaign or link that brought you here, for a limited period (currently 90 days), so we can tell which advertising works.
Your choice
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The forms work without analytics cookies.
9. Your rights
Under the DPDP Act you have these rights over your personal data.
Access
A summary of the personal data we hold about you and what we do with it, and the identities of the other Data Fiduciaries and Data Processors we have shared it with, with a description of what was shared.
Correction, completion and updating
Correcting data that is inaccurate or misleading, completing data that is incomplete, and updating data that has changed.
Erasure
Erasing personal data we no longer need, unless a law requires us to keep it.
Withdrawing consent
At any time, as described in section 3.
Grievance redressal
Raising a grievance with us about how we handle your personal data. The DPDP Act asks you to raise it with us first. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
Nomination
Nominating another person to exercise these rights on your behalf if you die or become unable to act because of unsoundness of mind or infirmity of body.
The DPDP Act also sets out duties for Data Principals: give authentic information, do not impersonate anyone, and do not file false or frivolous complaints.
10. Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, the new version appears on this page with a new date at the top.
Changes that affect your data
If a change affects how we use data you have already given us, we will tell you before it takes effect, using the contact details you gave us.
Requests and grievances
To access, correct or erase your personal data, to withdraw consent, to nominate someone, or to raise a grievance, contact the person who answers for Edutara on personal data.
The contact details of the person who answers questions about personal data and handles requests and grievances for Edutara will be published on this page.
