What is home tuition?

Home tuition is private teaching at the learner's own home, with one tutor for one learner. The tutor follows the learner's class, board and syllabus, moves at the learner's pace, and spends the whole lesson on that one student's questions, whether it is a Class 3 child learning to read aloud or a Class 12 student revising organic chemistry.

  • The tutor travels to the learner, so the lesson happens at a familiar desk and nobody spends the evening in traffic.
  • One learner per tutor, so every doubt can be raised and answered in the same lesson.
  • Lessons follow the learner's own board and books: CBSE and NCERT, ICSE and ISC, or a state board.
  • Days and timings are agreed with the tutor, around school, coaching, college or work.
  • Parents of younger learners can sit in, meet the tutor and follow what is being taught.
  • It is open to school students, entrance exam aspirants, college students and adults.

Who home tuition is for

Class 1 to 5

Reading, writing and number sense, English and Hindi, and EVS. A tutor at the same table can guide handwriting and reading aloud, and a parent can sit in.

Class 6 to 8

Maths, science, social science and languages, at the stage where each topic starts building on the last. A good time to close gaps before the board years.

Class 9 and 10

The board years on CBSE, ICSE or a state board such as Maharashtra SSC or Karnataka SSLC: maths, science, social science, English and the second language, with practice on past papers.

Class 11 and 12

Edutara is new, and the fairest way to judge a new service is by how it works. These are the rules each match follows, from the first request onwards.

One tutor, one learner

Each match is one learner with one tutor, so the whole lesson belongs to that learner.

Matched to the exact need

A Class 12 ISC physics student is matched with a tutor who teaches ISC physics at that level. Class, board, subject and exam all count.

The first lesson is a trial

The learner meets the tutor and sees how they teach, and you continue only if it works.

Lesson fees go to the tutor

You agree lesson fees with the tutor and pay the tutor directly. Edutara does not handle lesson money.

Tutors pay nothing to teach

No joining fee, no commission and no charge per student, so the fee you agree stays with the person who teaches.

Who the tutors are

College students, graduates, retired teachers and teachers outside the school system. Serving school teachers are left out, since Section 28 of the Right to Education Act, 2009 bars them from private tuition.

Before the tutor's first visit

Letting someone new into your home deserves a little care. These steps help the first lesson go well for everyone.

    Speak with the tutor on a call first. Ask what they teach, which boards they are most familiar with, and how they would plan the first lesson.

    Ask for identification

    It is reasonable to ask for a photo ID and proof of the tutor's college or qualification before they come home.

    Use a common room

    The dining table or the living room works well for the trial, with an adult at home, especially for a younger child.

    The school textbook, the notebook and the last test paper show the tutor where the learner stands within minutes.

    Days, timings, fees and what happens when a lesson is missed are easier to settle at the start, in a message you can both refer back to.

People at Edutara read that and look for a tutor who teaches exactly that, so a Class 10 ICSE student is matched with someone who teaches Class 10 ICSE maths, and a NEET aspirant with someone who teaches NEET biology. For home tuition, the tutor also has to be able to travel to your home at the times you need.
