Class 12 maths tuition, one student at a time

Class 12 maths tuition is what thousands of students come to Edutara for, and most of it is calculus, which alone carries 35 of the 80 marks in the CBSE paper. A tutor works through it with you at your table or on a screen, at your pace.

What is

Class 12 maths tuition

Class 12 maths is the last school mathematics most people ever sit, and almost every chapter of it stands on something taught in Class 11. CBSE sets it as Mathematics, subject code 041: an 80-mark theory paper of three hours plus 20 marks of internal assessment, built from six units, which are relations and functions, algebra, calculus, vectors and three-dimensional geometry, linear programming, and probability. Tuition for it means one tutor taking one learner through those units in a workable order, repairing the Class 11 ideas that keep surfacing underneath them, and then training the learner on the shape of the paper itself.

Key Points

  • Calculus carries 35 of the 80 theory marks in the CBSE course structure, more than twice the weight of any other unit.

  • The CBSE sample paper for 2026-27 has 38 compulsory questions in five sections, from 1-mark MCQs to 5-mark long answers.

  • Section E is three case study questions of four marks each, a format that rewards reading before writing.

  • Vectors and three-dimensional geometry carry 14 marks and are usually the first unit dropped when time runs out.

  • Commerce and humanities students often sit Applied Mathematics (241) instead, which trades 3-D geometry for financial maths and statistics.

  • Internal assessment is worth 20 marks: the best two of three periodic tests, and ten activities from the NCERT lab manual.

Format Options

Two ways a Class 12 maths lesson can run

Both are one tutor with one learner. The difference is whether the tutor sits beside your notebook or joins you on a screen, and which of those fits a Class 12 timetable that already has practicals and pre-boards in it.

  1. Duration: Usually 60 to 90 minutes, agreed with the tutor

    Maths tuition at home

The tutor comes to your house and works through problems next to you. For maths that matters more than for most subjects, because the tutor can see the exact line where your solution turned wrong.

    • The tutor watches you solve, step by step
    • Your NCERT books and school notes stay in use
    • Timing planned around school hours and practicals
    • Paper, pencil and a full page to think on
  2. Duration: Usually 60 minutes, agreed with the tutor

    Online maths tuition

A video call with a shared writing space, so the tutor's working and yours appear on the same screen. This suits a narrow need well: only integrals, only probability, only the parts of Class 11 that keep tripping you up.

    • A tutor from any part of India
    • Short, frequent sessions are easy to arrange near exams
    • The working can be saved and looked at again
    • No travel time on either side
Learning Roadmap

How a Class 12 maths year actually unfolds

The CBSE course structure suggests periodic tests in July or August, November, and December or January, with the board paper after that. A tutor's plan is shaped by those four stations more than by the chapter order in the book.

  1. Class 11 carry-over

The weeks before Class 12 makes sense

Continuity needs limits. Integration needs every trigonometric identity. Three-dimensional geometry needs vectors handled comfortably in two dimensions first. A tutor usually spends the opening weeks here, because a gap left now returns in December wearing a different chapter's name.

    Subjects

Limits and derivativesTrigonometric identitiesStraight linesSequences and seriesBinomial theorem

    Focus Areas

    • Find which Class 11 ideas are missing by watching you solve a problem
    • Rebuild only what Class 12 will actually stand on
    • Set a habit of writing full working from the first week
  2. The heavy half

    Roughly July to November

Matrices, determinants, continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives, and the long run through integration. This is where the 35 marks of calculus are earned or lost, and where the first two periodic tests fall in the CBSE schedule.

    Subjects

Matrices and determinantsContinuity and differentiabilityApplications of derivativesIntegrals

    Focus Areas

    • Method selection drilled until it happens before the pen moves
    • Every new chapter closed with a timed set of past questions
    • Periodic test papers read as information for the next week's work
  3. Pre-boards

    December into January

Differential equations, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability arrive while the school is setting pre-board papers. The pressure here is arithmetic of time: five things left, six weeks, and a paper to sit in between.

    Subjects

    Differential equationsVectorsThree-dimensional geometryLinear programmingProbability

    Focus Areas

    • Finish the syllabus with room to spare, then stop adding
    • Full three-hour papers under real conditions
    • The 20 internal assessment marks collected and counted
  4. The board month

    February and March

Nothing new is learnt here. The work is recall speed, clean presentation, and the discipline of attempting 38 questions in three hours with no calculator. CBSE publishes the date sheet for each cycle on cbse.gov.in, and the maths date is the one a Class 12 learner plans the whole of February around.

Program Syllabus

The six units of CBSE Mathematics (041)

This is the Class 12 course structure CBSE published for the 2026-27 session, with the marks it gives each unit. ISC and the state boards arrange the same mathematics differently, and a tutor maps the order on to whichever book your school follows.

Marks shown are out of the 80 in the theory paper. Internal assessment adds 20 more, assessed by the school.

Module 01

Relations and functions

Eight marks. Types of relations and the inverse trigonometric functions, which look like a short unit and quietly decide how comfortable the rest of calculus feels, since derivatives and integrals keep returning to them.

Topics Covered

  • Reflexive, symmetric and transitive relations
  • Equivalence relations
  • One-to-one and onto functions
  • Inverse trigonometric functions: domain and range
  • Principal value branch
  • Graphs of inverse trigonometric functions
Who It Is For

Who sits down for Class 12 maths tuition

The same six units serve four fairly different people, and the plan that suits one of them wastes the time of another. Say which one you are when you ask for a tutor.

A student on Mathematics (041), boards only

You want a clean board paper and a subject that stops eating your evenings. The work is coverage and accuracy: every unit finished, calculus finished twice, and enough past papers that the three hours in February feel familiar before you get there.

Recommended:

Boards and JEE Main in the same year

Your school year and your entrance-exam year are the same year. The JEE (Main) 2026 bulletin sets mathematics at 20 multiple choice questions and 5 numerical questions for 100 marks, and a large share of that sits on calculus and algebra you are already doing for the board paper.

Recommended:

Board depth first, then exam speedNumerical value questions practised separatelyNegative marking rehearsed well before the exam hall

Applied Mathematics (241)

You are heading towards commerce, economics or a degree where maths is a working tool. CBSE's own FAQ says 041 is meant for students going on to pure mathematics, physical sciences or engineering, and that 241 is for mathematics used inside another field.

Coming back after a weak Class 11

Maths stopped making sense somewhere in Class 11 and there was never time to go back for it. It is the reason Class 12 students most often ask for a maths tutor, and the repair carries a hard deadline.

Where a Class 12 maths mark is earned

A Class 12 maths year gets judged in four places. They draw on the same mathematics and they reward different things, and knowing which of them apply to you is what decides how a tutor plans the months.

Core Topics

  • •No overall choice, internal choice in named questions
  • •Assertion and reason questions
  • •Case study questions worth four marks each

Common Sticking Points

The paper mixes the whole syllabus in one sitting, so a chapter you finished in August arrives beside one you finished in January, with no warning about which method it wants.

What it carries

80 marks, 38 questions

A Peek at the Material

A page from an integration worksheet

One of the first things a maths tutor does is stop the guessing at the start of an integral. This is the kind of sheet that gets used for it, written for this page.

Choose the method before you pick up the pen

Read the integrand, then name the method

∫ x sin x dx∫ (2x+3)/(x²+3x+1) dx∫ dx/(x²-9)∫ √(4-x²) dx
by partssubstitutionpartial fractionstrigonometric substitution
a product of unlike functionsnumerator = denominator's derivativea difference of two squaresa root of a² - x²

Parts to result

  1. u = xdv = sin x dx-x cos x + sin x + C
  2. x² - 9 = (x-3)(x+3)split into partial fractions(1/6) ln |(x-3)/(x+3)| + C
  3. x = 2 sin θdx = 2 cos θ dθ(x/2)√(4-x²) + 2 sin⁻¹(x/2) + C

Check yourself

∫ (2x + 3)/(x² + 3x + 1) dx

Question: Which method does this one want, and what is the substitution?

Answer: Substitution. The numerator is exactly the derivative of the denominator, so put t = x² + 3x + 1, which gives dt = (2x + 3) dx and turns the whole thing into ∫ dt/t. The answer is ln |x² + 3x + 1| + C.

Written fresh for this page. A tutor builds the same sheet out of the integrals your own book and your own school papers keep setting.

Where the marks leak

Five places Class 12 maths marks go missing

These are not the hardest ideas in the syllabus. They are the ones that cost marks in a real three-hour paper, which is a different list, and a tutor spends more time here than on anything exotic.

Challenge

Starting an integral before deciding which method it needs

A common sticking point

Root cause

Substitution, partial fractions and integration by parts arrive within a few weeks of each other, and the book presents them one chapter at a time. In the paper they come shuffled. The pen starts moving on whichever method was practised most recently, and three minutes are gone before the student notices the integral was never going to yield to it.

What helps

A tutor makes the first step a decision, taken before any calculation. You read the integrand aloud, say what kind of thing it is, and only then write. After forty or fifty integrals sorted this way the recognition stops being a conscious step, which is the whole point of doing it slowly at first.

Challenge

Reading a probability question as though nothing were given

A common sticking point

Root cause

Conditional probability, the multiplication theorem, total probability and Bayes' theorem are the whole of the CBSE probability unit for 2026-27, and every one of them turns on which event is already known. The words carrying that condition are small ones: given that, if it is known that, was found to be. In a three-hour paper they get skimmed.

What helps

The tutor makes you write the events as symbols before any arithmetic, two lines at the top of the answer: one naming each event, one naming what is given. The tree diagram or the Bayes formula then almost fills itself, and the examiner can see the reasoning even if the final arithmetic slips.

Challenge

Losing the shortest distance question in three dimensions

A common sticking point

Root cause

For 2026-27 the course structure keeps lines only: direction cosines and ratios, the Cartesian and vector equation of a line, skew lines, the shortest distance and the angle between two lines. Students working from an older book keep hunting for planes, and students who cannot picture two lines that neither meet nor run parallel cannot see why the formula is the formula.

What helps

A tutor builds the picture before the algebra, usually with two pencils held apart in the air, then drills converting a line from Cartesian form to vector form until it takes seconds. The question can be set in either form and the formula wants the vector one, so that conversion is where the marks are quietly won.

Challenge

Treating linear programming as five marks worth skipping

A common sticking point

Root cause

It carries the smallest weight of the six units, five marks out of eighty, so it is what gets dropped when revision runs short. It is also the one unit where the method never changes: draw the constraints, shade the feasible region, list the corner points, compare. The student who skips it is handing back marks that were sitting still.

What helps

A tutor usually parks it deliberately in the last fortnight and drills the two things the marking scheme actually looks for: a feasible region drawn clearly with its corner points named, and a check on whether an unbounded region really does contain the maximum or minimum the question asked for.

Challenge

Answering case study questions like ordinary long answers

A common sticking point

Root cause

Section E of the CBSE paper is three case studies of four marks each, and each opens with a paragraph of context before its sub-parts. A student who has only practised bare questions reads the paragraph twice, takes fright at its length, and then answers the sub-parts in whatever order looks easiest.

What helps

The tutor teaches you to read the sub-parts first and the paragraph second, so you already know which two numbers in the story matter before you meet them. Then the sub-parts get done in order, because in these questions each one usually feeds the next.

Our Standards

What Edutara commits to for a Class 12 maths match

The Edutara model for a Class 12 maths learner, set out exactly as it runs, from the first request to the invoice and the tutor Edutara pays.

  • The paper you are actually sitting

You say which board and which paper: CBSE Mathematics 041, Applied Mathematics 241, ISC, or your state board. Edutara then looks for a tutor who teaches that one. CBSE's own FAQ calls 041 and 241 two different courses, so a tutor strong in one is not automatically the right person for the other.

  • Can you ask a stupid question here?

Maths tuition depends on whether the learner can ask a stupid question out loud in front of this particular person. You usually find that out in one lesson, and whenever it is not working, in the first week or before the pre-boards, Edutara replaces the tutor free of charge.

  • One fee, set by Edutara

Edutara sets the fee for Class 12 maths from the board, the number of lessons a week and the city, and puts the amount in front of you at enrolment. You pay Edutara on one invoice, and Edutara pays the tutor.

  • Tutors pay nothing to be here

No joining fee and no charge for a lead, and Edutara pays the tutor for every lesson. That holds permanently. A tutor who is paying to reach you has a reason to keep a match alive that has stopped working, and this removes it.

  • One learner, one tutor

There is no batch. The hour belongs to one person, which is the only arrangement in which a tutor can stop mid-question, look at your notebook, and see that the error happened two lines above the one you were asking about.

What Edutara looks for in a Class 12 maths tutor

Class 12 maths is unforgiving about gaps in the person teaching it, because every unit leans back on Class 11. These are the things Edutara asks about.

What we look for in a tutor
  • A degree with real mathematics in it, or an engineering degree, and comfort across every unit of the 041 course structure, including the avoided ones.
  • Working knowledge of the board the learner sits, since CBSE, ISC and the state boards ask for different amounts of proof, working and presentation.
  • Someone who has sat JEE Main or CUET-UG in person, when the learner is preparing for one of them alongside the board paper.
  • A serving schoolteacher falls outside this: Section 28 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 closes private tuition to them.
  • Applications are open to everyone else who knows the mathematics: a college student, a graduate, a research student, a retired teacher.
  • Patience with a learner who asks about a Class 11 idea in December, because December is when most of them finally do.

How a tutor teaches this subject

Diagnose backwards from the wrong answer

A wrong answer in maths carries its own history. The tutor asks to see the working, finds the line where it turned, and teaches from there. Over a few weeks the pattern of your particular errors becomes visible, and it is almost always narrower than it feels.

Write timed from the first month

Knowing a method and producing it in eleven minutes under a clock are separate skills, and the second one is what the paper tests. Timed writing starts early and small, one long-answer question at a time, long before anybody calls it revision.

Read the marking scheme with you

CBSE publishes sample papers with their marking schemes. Reading one together is a fast education in where the marks actually sit: the statement of the formula, the substitution, the figure, the final units. Students routinely lose marks they had already done the thinking for.

Two passes over calculus

Thirty-five marks of one paper cannot be learnt once. The first pass builds the methods chapter by chapter; the second, months later, mixes them up on purpose so that recognition gets practised without the chapter heading giving the answer away.

  1. Online tuition

    Anywhere in India

Online lessons need a shared writing surface, because maths taught by talking alone does not work. With that in place the tutor can be in another state, which matters when the need is narrow: only integration, only the Applied Mathematics statistics units, only the Class 11 chapters underneath.

Shared writing space so both workings are visible
Short sessions are easy to add near a pre-board
Recordings and written pages can be kept

FAQ

Class 12 maths, asked by the students sitting it

Answers taken from the CBSE course structure and sample paper for the 2026-27 session and the NTA bulletin for the JEE (Main) 2026 cycle, with the sources listed where they matter.

Which unit carries the most marks in Class 12 maths?
Calculus, by a long way. In the CBSE 2026-27 course structure for Mathematics (041) it carries 35 of the 80 theory marks. Vectors and three-dimensional geometry come next at 14, algebra at 10, relations and functions at 8, probability at 8, and linear programming at 5. That is why a tutor usually opens with calculus and comes back to it a second time in the new year. It is also why a weak Class 11 chapter on limits or trigonometric identities is worth fixing early: those ideas sit underneath all 35 marks.
I am sitting boards and JEE Main in the same year. Can one tutor do both?
Often yes, and it works best when the tutor treats them as two uses of one syllabus. For the 2026 cycle the NTA bulletin sets JEE (Main) Paper 1 mathematics at 20 multiple choice questions and 5 numerical value questions, 100 marks of the paper's 300, with four marks for a correct answer and minus one for a wrong one in both sections. The board paper rewards a full, well-presented solution; the entrance paper rewards a correct answer found fast. A tutor who understands that difference will have you write long solutions for one and drill speed for the other, on the same chapters.
How much does Class 12 maths tuition cost?
Edutara sets the fee for lessons. It varies with the class, the subject and the city, and Class 12 maths asks a good deal of whoever teaches it, which Edutara builds into the figure. You see the amount at enrolment, before anything starts, and one monthly invoice from Edutara covers the lessons, the search and a free change of tutor. Edutara pays the tutor, and tutors pay nothing at any point.
How do the 20 internal assessment marks work?
The school awards them, and they are separate from the 80-mark board paper. Ten marks come from periodic tests, with the best two of the three counted, and CBSE suggests those tests for July or August, November, and December or January. The other ten come from mathematics activities: any ten activities from the NCERT laboratory manual done through the year, with five marks for doing them and keeping the record, three for a year-end test on them and two for the viva. These marks are usually lost to neglect, and once the board exam is near they cannot be made up.
Can the whole thing be online, or does the tutor have to come home?
Either works, and the choice is usually practical. Lessons at home suit a student who needs someone watching the notebook while they solve, and a learner who works best when the study hour has a fixed place and time. Online lessons suit a narrow need well, such as only integration or only the statistics units of Applied Mathematics, and they open up tutors who live nowhere near you. What online lessons need is a shared writing space, because maths explained only in speech does not reach anybody.
Should I take Mathematics (041) or Applied Mathematics (241)?
CBSE answers this in its own FAQ on the subject. Mathematics (041) is meant for students who will go on to pure mathematics, physical sciences or engineering at university. Applied Mathematics (241) is for students who need mathematics for another field, such as business, economics, finance or life sciences. A student takes one of them, never both, and CBSE states plainly that they are two different courses and one is not a substitute for the other, including at a compartment examination. One more rule matters: a student who passed Basic Mathematics in Class 10 may offer 241 and may not offer 041.
Is it too late to start Class 12 maths tuition in December?
It is late and it is not pointless, and the plan has to change shape. By December the sensible aim is no longer whole-syllabus depth. It is finishing the units still open, usually differential equations, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability, and then putting the rest of the time into past papers. Linear programming and probability together are 13 marks of fairly mechanical method that can be secured in a fortnight. From there the tutor shapes the remaining weeks around the student's own past-paper scores, and that is where the February result is built.
Does the Class 12 syllabus still include planes and random variables?
Check what your school is teaching against the current course structure, because older textbooks and older guides disagree with it. For 2026-27, CBSE's three-dimensional geometry unit lists direction cosines and ratios, the Cartesian and vector equation of a line, skew lines, the shortest distance between two lines and the angle between two lines. The probability unit lists conditional probability, the multiplication theorem, independent events, total probability and Bayes' theorem. Students lose time preparing material the course structure no longer asks for, and a tutor who has read the current document will stop that on the first day.
Can a serving school teacher give me private tuition?
No. The bar comes from a law. Section 28 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 bars a teacher employed at a school from giving private tuition. So Edutara looks elsewhere: people still in college, graduates, research students, and teachers who have retired from the classroom. In practice a strong college student who sat this exact paper three years ago is often a better fit for Class 12 maths than the schoolteacher most learners first picture, because the pitfalls are still fresh in memory.
Complete Guide

A full Class 12 maths year, planned out

  1. 041 or 241: the choice made in Class 11 that Class 12 lives with

The decision between Mathematics (041) and Applied Mathematics (241) is taken at the start of Class 11, and by Class 12 it has already shaped what a student can apply for.

CBSE's FAQ on the subject is direct about the split. Mathematics (041) is the course for students heading towards pure mathematics, the physical sciences or engineering at university. Applied Mathematics (241) is for students who will use mathematics inside another subject, and the curriculum document names business, economics and the social sciences. The two are not interchangeable: CBSE states that they are different courses and that one cannot be substituted for the other, even at a compartment examination.

The content difference is large. Where 041 spends 35 marks on calculus and 14 on vectors and three-dimensional geometry, the 241 course structure for 2026-27 runs to eight units, with 15 marks on financial mathematics, 15 on calculus, 11 on numbers and quantification, 10 each on algebra and probability distributions, 8 on linear programming, 6 on time-based data and 5 on inferential statistics. A student in 241 will meet interest, annuities, index numbers and correlation, and will never meet a skew line.

One further rule catches students by surprise two years after they made the choice. A student who took Basic Mathematics in the Class 10 board examination may offer Applied Mathematics in Class 11 and 12, and may not offer Mathematics (041).

    Practical Tips

    1. Read the current CBSE curriculum document for whichever code you are on, since the unit weights move between sessions.
    2. If a degree in engineering or the physical sciences is even a possibility, 041 keeps the door open and 241 narrows it.
    3. Ask the school which code is on the registration, because that is what the board examination will be set from.
    4. A tutor for 241 needs comfort with statistics and financial mathematics, which is a different strength from calculus.
  2. Where the months go, and what usually goes wrong in each

A Class 12 maths year has a shape, and most of the trouble comes from ignoring it.

The opening weeks belong to Class 11, whether or not anybody plans for them. Continuity needs limits. Integration needs the trigonometric identities cold. Three-dimensional geometry needs vectors handled comfortably. A tutor who skips this to look productive is borrowing time at a bad rate, because the gap comes back in December with a different chapter's name on it.

From roughly July to November the calculus block runs: continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives, then the long haul through integration. CBSE's suggested schedule puts the first periodic test in July or August and the second in November, so there is external feedback in this stretch if the student is willing to read it as information.

December and January are crowded. Differential equations, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability all arrive while the school sets pre-board papers. The arithmetic here is unforgiving, and the usual failure is finishing the syllabus so late that no full paper is ever attempted under real conditions.

February and March add nothing new. The work is recall speed, clean presentation and the stamina to attempt 38 questions in three hours without a calculator.

    Practical Tips

    1. Finish the syllabus by mid-January so that February is free for full papers.
    2. Write at least six complete three-hour papers, marked strictly, before the board exam.
    3. Keep a written list of the mistakes you personally repeat, and read it before every paper.
    4. Treat each periodic test as data about what is missing, and go back for the missing thing that week.
  3. A home tutor, a coaching centre, or working alone

Most Class 12 students use some mixture of all three, and the question worth asking is which one carries the maths.

A coaching batch gives pace and company, and it moves whether or not you followed the last step. Working alone with NCERT and past papers is genuinely enough for some students, usually the ones who can tell when they have not understood something. A home tutor is expensive in attention, one hour for one person, and it earns that when a student needs somebody watching the working itself, line by line.

    Private tuitionAgreed with the tutor
The tutor sees the line where your solution turned, and teaches from there
The plan follows your school's chapter order and your pre-board dates
A question gets answered at the moment it appears
The most expensive of the three in fee per hour
Depends entirely on the match between two particular people
Travel time is built into the tutor's day, which limits when lessons can be
Coaching centreFixed course fee, set by the centre
A pace set from outside, which some students need
Classmates and a standing comparison of where you are
Printed material and test series already organised
The batch moves on whether or not you followed the last step
Doubt clearing happens at the end, when the doubt has gone cold
Travel and fixed timings on top of an already full school week
    Online tuitionAgreed with the tutor
A tutor from anywhere in India, which matters for a narrow need
Short extra sessions are easy to add before a pre-board
No travel time on either side
Needs a shared writing space and a connection that holds
Harder to notice when a student has stopped following
A younger learner may drift without someone in the room

Format matters less than fit. A student who will ask questions out loud does well in a batch; a student who goes quiet when lost needs somebody sitting across the table, in person or on a screen.

  4. The marks students hand back without noticing

Some marks are lost to difficulty, and those take a year of work to win back. Many more are lost to habit, and a habit can be changed inside a single term once somebody points at it. Every item below has cost a Class 12 student marks they had already done the thinking for.

    Mistakes & Solutions

Writing the answer without the formula or the substitution above it
Read a CBSE marking scheme once with your tutor. Marks are attached to the statement of the formula and to the substitution, so a correct answer with no visible route through it collects less than the student expects.
Leaving linear programming for the end and then leaving it out
Do it deliberately in the last fortnight. Five marks of fixed method, secured in two or three sittings, and the marking scheme rewards a clear feasible region with its corner points named.
Preparing chapters the current course structure no longer contains
Open the CBSE curriculum document for 2026-27 alongside the textbook at the start of the year and mark what is actually listed. Older guides still carry material the course structure has dropped.
Letting the internal assessment activities pile up until February
Ten activities from the NCERT lab manual, spread across the year, with the record kept as you go. Twenty marks are at stake and none of them can be recovered once the board exam is near.
Never writing a complete paper under real conditions
Three hours, 38 questions, no calculator, no pauses. Do this at least six times before February, because pacing is a skill and the exam hall is a poor place to learn it.
