What is JEE?

JEE, the Joint Entrance Examination, is how India's national engineering institutes choose their B.Tech students, and it runs in two stages.

JEE Main is set by the NTA: one three-hour computer-based paper of 75 questions in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, offered in a January and an April session, and its rank leads to NITs, IIITs and other government-funded institutes through JoSAA. The top 2,50,000 candidates of that paper may then sit JEE Advanced, two compulsory three-hour papers set by the IITs, and that rank decides seats at the 23 IITs.

From Class 11 to JoSAA: the JEE years

Most students prepare across two school years and then sit the exams in a fixed order. The dates here come from the 2026 cycle, the latest complete one, plus the January 2027 window NTA has already proposed.

  1. Class 11

    The year the base is laid

    Class 11 holds the chapters that later questions lean on: mechanics in Physics, the mole concept and bonding in Chemistry, and quadratics, sequences and coordinate geometry in Maths. A gap left here comes back in Class 12 electrostatics, organic chemistry and calculus.

    January and April sessions

    In the 2026 cycle Paper 1 ran from 21 to 30 January and from 2 to 9 April, mostly in two shifts a day. A student may take one session or both, and the better NTA score counts. For 2027, NTA has proposed 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January for Session 1.

    From late April to July

    In 2026 the top 2,50,000 from JEE Main registered from 23 April, IIT Roorkee held both papers on 17 May, results came on 1 June and JoSAA seat allocation began the next day. JoSAA 2026 filled seats at 138 institutes over five rounds.

Preparation tip: A wrong integer in Section B costs a mark exactly as a wrong option does, so attempt a numerical question when the working holds together, and round the final value to the nearest integer as NTA asks.

Dates for the 2027 cycle

NTA's calendar of 16 September 2026 proposes 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January 2027 for Session 1 of JEE (Main) 2027, with 31 January as a buffer day, and calls every date tentative. The 2027 information bulletin, which sets the pattern, syllabus and eligibility, comes separately, as do the April session and JEE Advanced 2027. Until they appear, the rules on this page are the 2026 ones.

How a JEE lesson is taught

Derive first, then drill

A formula is derived or reasoned out before it is used, then practised on a ladder of questions from NCERT level up to JEE Advanced level. A student who can rebuild a formula can still use it when memory fails in the exam hall.

An error log that sets the next lesson

Every test and worksheet feeds a log of wrong answers by chapter and by cause: the concept, the calculation or a misread question. The next lesson starts from whichever column is longest.

Timed work on a screen

Both exams are computer based, so part of the practice happens on a screen: reading a long question, marking one for review, and entering Section B answers with the mouse and the on-screen keypad.

Short revision loops

Inorganic facts, organic reaction chains and physics formulas come back in five-minute loops spread over weeks, which is how they stay in memory until January and May.

Questions students and parents ask about JEE tuition

The answers use NTA's 2026 information bulletin, the JEE (Advanced) 2026 brochure and NTA's calendar for January 2027.

When should JEE tuition start: Class 11 or Class 12?
Class 11 is the natural start. Mechanics, the mole concept, chemical bonding and most of algebra and coordinate geometry sit in the Class 11 syllabus, and the Class 12 chapters build on them. Starting in Class 12 is common as well. The first weeks then go to the Class 11 chapters the student finds weakest, alongside the Class 12 school work, and a trial lesson on one hard chapter shows quickly where the gaps are.
Do my Class 12 board marks matter for IIT and NIT admission?
They do, through a minimum that applies at admission. As per the JEE (Advanced) 2026 brochure and the NTA bulletin, IITs and the NIT+ system ask for at least 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of successful candidates of your board. You can sit JEE without it. The rule is applied when a seat is allotted, which is why a sensible JEE plan keeps the board exams in view all through Class 12.
Do I need a tutor for all three subjects?
Many students take a tutor for the one subject pulling their total down and manage the other two on their own or at coaching. A student who wants all three can have one tutor for each subject or one tutor for two, depending on who is available.
When is JEE Main 2027?
NTA's examination calendar of 16 September 2026 proposes 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January 2027 for Session 1, with 31 January as a buffer day, and calls the dates tentative. The information bulletin with the application dates, pattern and syllabus is issued separately. In the 2026 cycle, the application for Session 1 opened on 31 October 2025. The April session and JEE Advanced 2027 are announced later by NTA and the organising IIT.
What is the difference between percentile and rank in JEE Main?
Paper 1 is held over several shifts, each with its own question paper; in January 2026 there were ten. NTA therefore turns each shift's raw marks into a percentile, the share of candidates in that shift who scored the same as you or less, worked out to seven decimal places. The merit list merges these NTA scores across all shifts of both sessions, your better session counts, and your rank comes from that merged list. Ties are broken on the Mathematics score first, then Physics, then Chemistry.
How many attempts do I get at JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
JEE Main has no age limit. For the 2026 exam NTA accepted candidates who passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025 or were appearing in 2026, which works out to three years of eligibility with two sessions in each. The 2027 bulletin will confirm the rule for 2027. JEE Advanced allows at most two attempts, in two consecutive years. For 2026 the candidate had to have first sat Class 12 in 2025 or 2026 and to have been born on or after 1 October 2001, with five years' relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
Can I write JEE Main and JEE Advanced in Hindi?
Yes. JEE Main 2026 was offered in 13 languages, and English with Hindi was available at every exam centre in India. The paper shows English next to the language you chose when applying, and that choice cannot be changed later. JEE Advanced 2026 was set in English and Hindi, and you could switch between the two at any time during the paper. In both exams the English version prevails if the two differ, so a tutor who teaches in Hindi also teaches the English terms.
I already attend a coaching institute. Will a home tutor clash with it?
A tutor can work from your coaching modules and test papers, so the two move through the same chapters in the same order. Coaching sets the pace for a whole batch; the tutor uses that same material to clear the doubts you could not raise in class and to go through your test mistakes one by one. Lesson days are agreed around the coaching timetable.

Yes. In JEE Main 2026 a correct answer earned +4 and a wrong one −1, in the multiple-choice Section A and in the numerical Section B alike. An unanswered question, or one only marked for review, scored 0. Section B answers are entered with the mouse on an on-screen keypad and rounded to the nearest integer.

A complete guide to the JEE years

  1. How a JEE year runs, using the 2026 cycle

    The 2026 cycle is the latest complete one, and it shows the order a Class 12 student lives through. NTA opened applications for Session 1 of JEE Main on 31 October 2025, and Paper 1 was held between 21 and 30 January 2026 over ten shifts. The board exams came next: NTA places its two sessions in January and April so that they do not clash with the boards.

    Session 2 ran from 2 to 9 April 2026, and the Paper 1 result came in April. Registration for JEE Advanced opened on 23 April. IIT Roorkee held both papers on 17 May, results came on 1 June, the Architecture Aptitude Test followed on 4 June, and JoSAA seat allocation began on 2 June and ran five rounds.

    For 2027 only the Session 1 window is proposed so far: 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January 2027. A tutor plans back from those dates, so that the Class 12 chapters January needs are finished in time and revised at least once.

    2. Decide early whether the student is aiming at JEE Main alone or at both exams, because the Advanced-only topics take months to learn well.
