What is

CUET-UG

CUET-UG is the common entrance test the National Testing Agency conducts for undergraduate admission to central universities and other participating universities. It is a computer-based test, offered in thirteen Indian languages. For the 2026 cycle the NTA put 37 test papers on the table, made up of 13 languages, 23 domain subjects and one General Aptitude Test, and a candidate could choose up to five of them. Every paper is built the same way: 50 compulsory questions in 60 minutes, five marks for a correct answer, one mark taken off for a wrong one.

Key Points

  1. Computer-based mode only, with the question paper in English and in the language you opted for
  2. Up to five papers in the 2026 cycle, chosen irrespective of the subjects taken in Class 12
  3. Fifty questions and sixty minutes in every paper, all of them compulsory, so a skipped chapter cannot be dodged
  4. Five marks for a right answer, one mark deducted for a wrong one, nothing for a question left alone
  5. Raw marks become an NTA score by the equi-percentile method wherever a subject runs across several shifts
  6. The merit list and the counselling belong to each university; the NTA conducts the test and declares the score
Format Options

Two ways a CUET-UG lesson can run

Both work through the same papers. Candidates pick whichever suits their travel, their timetable and the desk they already study at.

  1. Duration: Usually 60 to 90 minutes, agreed with the tutor

    CUET-UG tuition at home

The tutor comes to your home and teaches the papers you have actually registered for, using your own books, your notes and the mocks you have already attempted. This suits a candidate whose study table, laptop and daily routine are already in one place.

    • Timed practice at the desk where the real revision happens
    • Domain subject and General Test planned into the same week
    • Paper choice read against the programmes you want to apply to
  2. Duration: Usually 60 minutes, agreed with the tutor

    Online CUET-UG tuition

Lessons run over a video call with a shared screen, which suits this exam because the paper itself is attempted on a computer. A candidate in a smaller town can work with a tutor who teaches a domain subject nobody nearby teaches at Class 12 depth.

    • Mock papers attempted on screen, the way the exam is taken
    • Wrong answers opened up in the same sitting
    • Reaches a candidate anywhere in India with a steady connection
Learning Roadmap

A CUET-UG year, stage by stage

In the 2026 cycle the exam fell in May, which left a narrow gap after the Class 12 board papers. Tuition is usually planned backwards from that.

  1. Choosing the papers

    Before the application window shuts

For the 2026 cycle the NTA kept the online application open from 3 to 30 January 2026. The choice of up to five papers is made on that form, and the fee is worked out from the number of papers, so this decision is read carefully before it is submitted.

    Subjects

    Language paperDomain subjectsGeneral Aptitude Test

    Focus Areas

    • Reading the eligibility each university sets for the programme you want
    • Working the paper choice backwards from that list
  2. The Class 12 term

School work and CUET side by side

The domain papers sit on the Class 12 syllabus, so most of the school year already counts. What has to be carved out separately is the General Aptitude Test, which no board course covers, and the habit of answering in one line under a clock.

    Subjects

    Domain subjectGeneral Aptitude Test

    Focus Areas

    • One weekly hour of reasoning and current affairs
    • Chapter revision turned into one-line recall
    • Short timed sets of twenty questions
  3. After the board papers

The weeks that decide the score

Once the board papers end, the syllabus is already known and the work turns into shape and speed. This is when a tutor moves the student from studying a chapter to answering fifty questions from it without stopping to think about the format.

    Focus Areas

    • Paper-wise revision in the order the exam is scheduled
    • Rebuilding the weak chapters found in mocks
  4. Full mock papers

    Sixty minutes at a time

A mock is attempted in one sitting, on a screen, with nothing else open. What matters afterwards is the reading: which marks were lost to a gap in knowledge, which to misreading a stem, and which to a guess that should not have been taken.

What a CUET-UG tutor covers

No two candidates carry the same paper set, so the plan is built from the papers printed on your own confirmation page.

Facts on this page follow the CUET (UG) 2026 information bulletin and the 2026 syllabus published by the NTA. The syllabus and schedule for the 2027 cycle are announced by the NTA.

Module 01

The language paper, English carrying code 101

The published syllabus asks for reading and usage. Passages are capped at 300 words and come in three kinds, factual, narrative and literary, and the literature chapters of the school course do not appear here at all.

Topics Covered

  • Factual, narrative and literary comprehension
  • Rearranging the parts of a passage
  • Choosing the correct word
  • Synonyms and antonyms
  • Match the following
Who It Is For

Who sits CUET-UG

The 2026 bulletin opened the test to anyone who has passed Class 12 or was appearing in 2026, and set no age limit of its own.

A Class 12 student in the board season

Boards and CUET-UG land within weeks of each other, and the same domain syllabus feeds both. The difficulty is the shape of the answer: written out for the board, one option for CUET-UG, with a mark lost when that option is wrong.

Recommended:

Domain subject taught alongside the board syllabusOne General Test hour every week

A candidate sitting the test again

Someone who has already appeared knows the format and usually knows, to the paper, where the marks went. Tuition then starts from that scorecard: which paper carried the loss, and whether it was knowledge, speed or a guessing habit.

Recommended:

Paper-wise reading of the last attemptFull mocks from the first month

A student taking a subject outside the Class 12 combination

The NTA lets a candidate pick papers irrespective of what they studied in Class 12, so a humanities student may want an Economics paper, or a science student a Mass Media paper. The subject still has to be learnt at Class 12 depth from the start.

Recommended:

University eligibility checked before the formThe NCERT base of the new subject, from chapter one

A candidate writing in a language other than English

The question paper appears in English and in the language you opted for, and the bulletin says the English version prevails if the two read differently. A tutor who works in that medium can keep both wordings in view during practice.

Recommended:

Practice in the chosen mediumTechnical terms rehearsed in both versions
Where a CUET-UG score is used

The universities behind one score

The NTA conducts the test and declares the score. After that each university runs its own admission, on that score and on its own rules.

The participating list on the CUET portal is grouped into central universities, state universities, deemed universities, private universities and other government institutions. The 2026 bulletin printed 48 central universities as they stood on 3 January 2026, and calls the wider list dynamic. Read it on the portal, because a list copied elsewhere goes stale within weeks.

Central universities

The list the information bulletin prints in full

How this pathway works

These are the universities established by an Act of Parliament, and the bulletin carries their names as an appendix. Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University, the University of Delhi and the University of Hyderabad all sit on that 2026 list.

Best for

A candidate applying across states, since one score reaches all of them

State government universities

Admission close to home on the same score

How this pathway works

A growing number of state universities take the CUET-UG score for their undergraduate programmes. They appear under their own heading on the participating universities page, and each one publishes its own programme list, eligibility and counselling schedule.

Best for

A candidate who wants to study in the home state without a second entrance test

Deemed and private universities

Listed separately on the same portal

How this pathway works

Deemed universities and private universities are two further headings on the participating list. Their programmes and their cut-offs are set institution by institution, so the score opens the door and the university's own criteria decide what happens next.

Best for

A candidate weighing a private university against a central one

Other government institutions

The heading most candidates scroll past

How this pathway works

The portal keeps a fifth group for other government institutions that admit on this score. It is worth opening, because a programme a candidate assumed needed a separate test is sometimes sitting in this list.

Best for

A candidate hunting for every course a single score can reach

The three kinds of paper

Whichever of the three it is, a paper runs the same length and carries the same marks.

Language paper

One of 13 languages, 50 questions
  • Comprehension of factual, narrative and literary passages
  • Verbal ability and word choice
  • Reading a 300-word passage at speed

Preparation tip: Practise on passages you have never seen. The syllabus caps the length, so the skill being tested is how fast you can find an answer that is already on the page.

Domain subject

One of 23 subjects, 50 questions
  • Class 12 depth in the subject
  • One-line recall of definitions, units and exceptions
  • Numerical work without a calculator

Preparation tip: Revise each chapter twice over: once to understand it, once to turn it into the flat facts a single option can be built from.

General Aptitude Test

One paper, 50 questions, 250 marks
  • Current affairs of the months before the exam
  • Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and statistics
  • Logical and analytical reasoning
  • General science and environment literacy

Preparation tip: Start this one in Class 11 or early in Class 12. Current affairs are gathered over months, and three weeks in April buys very little of it.

A score for one admission year

The 2026 bulletin states that the NTA score for that cycle is valid for admission to the academic year 2026-27 only, and that appearing for the test gives a candidate no right to admission anywhere. Selection rests on the university's eligibility, its merit list and its own verification.

A General Test question of the kind the syllabus describes

A train covers 180 km in the first 3 hours and 200 km in the next 2 hours.

Question: What is its average speed over the whole journey?

Answer: 380 km in 5 hours, so 76 km per hour. The trap is averaging 60 and 100 to get 80, which ignores the unequal hours.

Where CUET-UG marks go missing

Five places candidates lose marks

Each of these comes out of the way the paper is built, which is why they turn up again in the same weeks every cycle.

Challenge

Answering on a half-remembered rule

A common sticking point

Root cause

A board paper charges nothing for a wrong answer, so nothing in twelve years of school teaches a student to leave a question alone. Against five marks for a hit, the one-mark deduction is mild, and a blind pick between four options still pays. The confident wrong answer is the costly one: a misremembered formula pulls the student to the option the examiner built for exactly that mistake.

What helps

A tutor marks the mock and separates the wrong answers the student was unsure about from the ones the student was sure about. The sure ones are the real work: the misconception behind each is traced and corrected, because that is where the deduction keeps coming from.

Challenge

Preparing the domain subject from board notes alone

A common sticking point

Root cause

Board answers are written out, so revision drifts towards long answers, diagrams and headings. A CUET-UG question wants one option, and it often turns on a definition, a unit, a year or an exception sitting in a single line of the NCERT text.

What helps

Lessons run each chapter twice. The second pass is spent reading the paragraphs a one-line question could be built from, and the tutor asks them in that form until the recall is flat and quick.

Challenge

Leaving the General Aptitude Test until April

A common sticking point

Root cause

No school teaches this paper and no board result depends on it, so it slips down the list. Its syllabus runs from current affairs and general science to arithmetic reasoning, and current affairs in particular cannot be assembled in three weeks.

What helps

One short slot a week from the beginning of Class 12: an hour of reasoning practice and a running current affairs notebook the tutor checks and questions aloud.

Challenge

Choosing five papers without reading the university's eligibility

A common sticking point

Root cause

The NTA allows papers to be chosen irrespective of the Class 12 combination, which reads like freedom. The university then applies its own eligibility for the programme, and a paper that does not answer that requirement carries the candidate nowhere.

What helps

Before the form is filled, the candidate and the tutor open each programme on the university's own site, read its eligibility, and build the list of papers backwards from what it asks for.

Challenge

Practising without a clock running

A common sticking point

Root cause

Fifty questions in sixty minutes leaves about seventy-two seconds each, and there is no other section to slip into when one question refuses to open. A candidate used to untimed practice meets that wall for the first time in the exam hall.

What helps

Practice is timed from the first week, in sixty-minute blocks on a screen, so that moving on from a stubborn question is already a habit by May.

None of this says anything about how well a candidate knows the subject. The paper asks for the subject in a shape the school year rarely practises.

How It Works

How CUET-UG tuition is arranged

The papers on your confirmation page decide who is a good tutor for you, so the first conversation is about that list.

  1. 01

    Tell us the papers

You name the papers you have registered for, the language you will write the exam in, the city you are in, and whether lessons should be at home or online.

  2. 02

We look for a tutor who teaches those papers

Someone who holds that domain subject at Class 12 depth and has worked with the way the General Test asks its questions. One learner, one tutor, for the papers you actually sit.

  3. 03

Watch the tutor handle one of your papers

In the first hour you watch how the tutor handles one of your papers. If another tutor would suit your paper list better, then or after the board exams, Edutara makes the switch without charging for it.

  4. 04

    Lessons at home or online

Home tuition where a tutor for your papers teaches nearby, online where the domain subject is one that few tutors around you take at this level.

  5. 05

    A fee set by Edutara

Edutara sets the fee for lessons from the class, the papers on your list and the city, and bills it monthly. Edutara pays the tutor, and tutors pay Edutara nothing at any stage.

What a CUET-UG tutor needs to know

Five papers inside one season asks for somebody who has sat this kind of paper recently, or has taught it through a full cycle.

What we look for in a tutor
  • A degree in the domain subject, or current study of it at a university that admits through CUET-UG
  • Working knowledge of the NCERT Class 12 text the domain paper is drawn from
  • Practice with fifty-question, sixty-minute papers and marking that deducts for a wrong answer
  • Familiarity with the General Test syllabus the NTA publishes, down to environment literacy
  • Comfort teaching in the medium the candidate has opted for on the application form
  • Anyone employed as a school teacher is outside this work, under Section 28 of the RTE Act, 2009

How the papers are taught

One paper to a sitting

A lesson stays on a single paper, because the exam is a single paper for a single hour. Mixing three subjects into one evening builds a habit the exam hall never asks for.

The NTA syllabus open on the table

Each paper has its own syllabus document, published separately. Lessons follow that document, point by point, and the school's chapter list is used where the two overlap.

Marking the mock, then reading it

A mock earns its hour only when it is read afterwards. Wrong answers are sorted into three piles (never learned, known but misread, known but rushed), and each pile is worked in a different way.

FAQ

What CUET-UG candidates ask

The answers below follow the CUET (UG) 2026 information bulletin and the 2026 syllabus documents published by the NTA.

How many subjects can a candidate take in CUET-UG?
For the 2026 cycle the NTA allowed a maximum of five papers, counting the language and the General Aptitude Test among them, and they could be chosen irrespective of the subjects taken in Class 12. The university still decides admission, so the sensible order is to read the eligibility of each programme you want on that university's own site, then pick the five papers that answer it. The rules for the 2027 cycle are announced by the NTA in its information bulletin.
When is CUET-UG held and when does the application open?
For the 2026 cycle the NTA kept the online application open from 3 to 30 January 2026 and scheduled the examination from 11 to 31 May 2026 in computer-based mode, with the result declared on 23 June 2026. The dates for the 2027 cycle are announced by the NTA at cuet.nta.nic.in, and nothing on this page should be read as a date for that cycle.
What comes in the General Aptitude Test?
The NTA syllabus for the General Test lists general knowledge and current affairs, general mental ability and numerical ability, reasoning drawn from simple arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and statistics, logical and analytical reasoning, and general science and environment literacy. It carries the same fifty questions and the same 250 marks as any domain paper. Because no school subject prepares it, it is the paper most often left too late, and the one where steady weekly work shows up most clearly.
Can a tutor teach me a domain subject I did not take in Class 12?
Yes, and candidates do this when a programme asks for a domain paper outside their school combination. The paper still sits at the Class 12 level of that subject, so a year of steady work is involved and starting early matters. Read the university's eligibility first, because some programmes ask for the subject to have been studied in Class 12 as well, and in that case the paper alone will not carry the application.
Who is eligible to appear for CUET-UG?
The 2026 bulletin says candidates who have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination, or were appearing in 2026, could sit the test, and the NTA set no age limit of its own. The qualifying examinations it lists include the CBSE and CISCE Class 12 examinations, intermediate and pre-university examinations of recognised boards, the NIOS senior secondary examination taken with at least five subjects, and a number of others. Conditions on age or the year of passing can still be applied by the university you apply to.
Is there negative marking in CUET-UG?
Yes. The 2026 bulletin sets a correct answer at five marks, deducts one mark for a wrong answer and gives nothing for a question left untouched. With fifty questions to a paper, that is 250 marks in play. Work the arithmetic through and it is gentler than most candidates assume: at five for a hit and one for a miss, an answer starts paying the moment your chance of being right is better than about one in six. The questions that actually cost marks are the ones where a half-remembered rule is pointing you confidently at a wrong option, because there your chance is worse than a blind pick. A tutor works this out with the student on marked mocks, question by question.
Can CUET-UG be prepared alongside the Class 12 board exams?
That is how most candidates do it, and the calendar leaves little room for anything else: board papers run through the first months of the year and CUET-UG followed in May for the 2026 cycle. The overlap helps with the domain papers, which sit on the Class 12 syllabus. Two things need their own time. One is the General Aptitude Test, which no board course covers. The other is timed practice in single-answer questions, which a board paper never asks for. A fixed weekly slot for both from the start of Class 12 is far easier than a sprint in April.
How is the score worked out when a subject runs in several shifts?
The NTA converts raw marks into an NTA score by the equi-percentile method, applied separately for each subject held in more than one shift. Percentiles are calculated within a shift, then equated across shifts, so that candidates who met a harder set of questions are not left behind by it. The 2026 bulletin adds that the score for that cycle is valid for admission to the academic year 2026-27 only, and that the merit list is prepared by each university, with no role for the NTA in it.
CUET ki tuition ghar par ho sakti hai kya?
Yes. Tell Edutara your city, the papers printed on your CUET-UG confirmation and whether you would like lessons at home or online. Edutara then looks for a tutor who teaches exactly those papers. The first lesson shows how that tutor handles your papers, and a switch to someone else is free whenever the fit is off. Edutara then confirms the fee, which moves with the class, the paper list and the city, and sends one invoice a month.
Complete Guide

A longer guide to the CUET-UG year

  1. Reading the scheme the way a candidate has to

Almost everything about CUET-UG follows from one line in the NTA scheme: every paper is fifty compulsory questions in sixty minutes, five marks for a right answer and one mark off for a wrong one.

Read it slowly and three consequences fall out. First, there is no internal choice, so the chapter you were hoping to avoid can appear and there is nothing to attempt instead. Second, the clock allows about seventy-two seconds a question, which is generous for recall and thin for a numerical that has to be set up from scratch. Third, the penalty makes attempting everything a losing habit, even though every board exam a student has sat rewards exactly that.

The subject list for 2026 ran to 37 papers: 13 languages, 23 domain subjects and the General Aptitude Test. A candidate could carry up to five of them, and the fee was calculated from how many were chosen. The medium matters as much as the subject, because the question paper appears in English and in the language you opted for, and the bulletin says the English version prevails where the two differ.

    Practical Tips

    1. Print your confirmation page and keep it where you study. That list is your syllabus for the year.
    2. Look up the subject code of each paper you chose; the NTA publishes a separate syllabus document for each one.
    3. Fix the medium early, because the option cannot be changed after the form closes.
    4. Treat seventy-two seconds a question as the unit of practice from the first week.
  2. Fitting CUET-UG around the board papers

The board syllabus and the domain papers overlap heavily, which is the single piece of good luck in this calendar. What does not overlap is the shape of the answer and the existence of a General Aptitude Test that no school timetable makes room for.

Most candidates settle this by splitting the week. School work and board revision carry the domain content through the year, while one fixed hour goes to reasoning, arithmetic and a current affairs notebook. Once the board papers finish, the domain work turns from learning to answering, and full mocks start.

The three routes below are the ones a Class 12 student actually weighs up when planning the year.

    Private tuitionAgreed with the tutor
Built around your own five papers and your own weak chapters
Hours can be moved when the board timetable moves
No travel in the weeks when every hour counts
Depends on a tutor for that subject being reachable from your locality
No classmates to measure your speed against
    Coaching centreSet by the centre
A fixed batch schedule that keeps the work moving
A room full of candidates sitting the same papers
The batch follows a common paper set, which may not be yours
Travel time during the board season
The pace belongs to the group
    Online tuitionAgreed with the tutor
Reaches a tutor for a domain subject nobody nearby teaches
Mocks attempted on a screen, as the exam is
Easy to hold a short weekly General Test slot
Needs a steady connection and a quiet hour
Written working is harder for the tutor to watch closely

Whichever route a student takes, the two fixed points are the same: the domain papers ride on the Class 12 syllabus, and the General Aptitude Test needs its own hour every week from early in the year.

  3. The arithmetic of marks, and the mistakes it punishes

It helps to do the sum once, on paper, before the first mock is attempted. Forty correct answers, five wrong and five left untouched gives 195 out of 250. Now attempt those five blanks. If every one of them goes wrong the paper falls to 190, and if two of the five come right it climbs to 202.

That spread is the whole argument about guessing, and it settles it. Five marks for a hit against one for a miss means an answer starts earning as soon as your chance of being right passes roughly one in six, and a blind pick between four options is already well past that line. So the marks on this paper leak away where a candidate is certain and wrong, because a misremembered rule drives the pick below what chance alone would give, and because the distractors are written for precisely those mistakes.

The same arithmetic explains how a candidate who knows the subject can finish below one who knows it less well. Knowledge, speed and the judgement of when to stop working on a question all carry marks here, and the last two improve with practice faster than most test-takers expect.

    Mistakes & Solutions

Treating the CUET-UG score as the admission itself
The NTA declares the score. Each university publishes its own merit list, counselling schedule and eligibility, so the university's website is checked from the day the form is filled, and again when the result is out.
Choosing Applied Mathematics or Mathematics without reading the syllabus
Open the NTA document for code 319 and read Section B2. Modulo arithmetic, allegation and mixture, boats and streams and pipes and cisterns sit there, and a student who studied Mathematics in Class 12 has met none of them.
Assuming the language paper repeats the school English course
The published syllabus asks for comprehension of passages up to 300 words and for verbal ability. Practise on unseen passages and on word choice, and leave the prescribed literature to the board exam.
Waiting for the result before looking at university programmes
Read the eligibility, the seats and the previous cut-offs of the programmes you want while you are still preparing. It changes which papers you should be spending the most hours on.
