What is
Class 10 maths tuition
Class 10 is the year maths stops rewarding memory. CBSE sets 80 marks of written paper across seven units with 20 marks assessed inside the school, and the syllabus names the results a student has to **prove**: the irrationality of √2, √3 and √5, the Basic Proportionality Theorem, the two tangent theorems of a circle, and the identity sin²A + cos²A = 1. ICSE sets one paper of three hours carrying 80 marks with 20 more from internal assessment, and its Class 10 list runs through GST, banking, shares and dividends, and matrices. Tuition in Class 10 means one tutor sitting with one student and closing the gaps a full classroom cannot stop for.
Key Points
- CBSE puts 20 of the 80 paper marks on Algebra and 15 on Geometry, so the year is largely won in two units.
- Mathematics Standard (041) and Mathematics Basic (241) share one syllabus and differ in how the paper is set.
- The 20 internal marks come from a pen-paper test and multiple assessment, a portfolio and lab practical work.
- CBSE students now sit a first examination in February, with an optional second one in May to improve.
- ICSE, UP Board, Maharashtra SSC and Madhyamik each set this subject their own way, so a tutor teaches to your board.
Two ways a Class 10 maths lesson can run
Both are one tutor with one learner. Students usually choose by what their week allows: travel time, a quiet room, and the hour when they are still awake enough to think.
- Duration: Usually 60 to 90 minutes, agreed with the tutor
Maths tuition at home
The tutor comes to your home and works on paper, which is how the board paper will be written. Rough work, figures and the full solution stay visible, so a wrong turn can be traced back to the step where it began.
- Geometry figures drawn by hand, the way the paper asks for them
- The same desk and the same light every week
- The week's work stays in one notebook, ready to revise from
- Duration: Usually 45 to 75 minutes, agreed with the tutor
Online maths tuition
Lessons run over video with a shared whiteboard, so a construction or a graph is built in front of the student and saved for revision. This suits a learner whose board is hard to find a tutor for nearby.
- Whiteboard pages saved and reread before a test
- A tutor who teaches your board, from any city
- Short extra sittings when a chapter test is close
How a Class 10 maths year is usually built
Most students reach tuition somewhere in the middle of this. A tutor begins wherever the student actually is and takes the rest in order.

What a tutor covers across the seven units
This is the CBSE course structure for 2026-27 with the marks the board puts on each unit. A tutor teaching ICSE or a state board maps the same ground onto that syllabus.
Unit marks are from the CBSE Class X mathematics syllabus for 2026-27, codes 041 and 241. These 80 written marks sit alongside 20 internal marks.
| Module & Description | Topics Covered |
|---|---|
Number Systems (6 marks) Real numbers, the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic and the proofs that √2, √3 and √5 are irrational. Small in marks, and the first place a student has to write out a proof in full. |
|
Algebra (20 marks) The largest unit: polynomials, pairs of linear equations, quadratic equations and arithmetic progressions, ending in situational problems that have to be turned into equations before anything can be solved. |
|
Coordinate Geometry (6 marks) Distance formula and section formula for internal division, reviewed on the coordinate plane. Short, mechanical and worth full marks to a student who plots the points before reaching for a formula. |
|
Geometry (15 marks) Similar triangles and circles. The syllabus marks which results a student must prove and which may be used as stated, and that line decides what has to be learned as an argument. |
|
Trigonometry (12 marks) Ratios of an acute angle of a right triangle, the identity sin²A + cos²A = 1, and heights and distances. The board keeps these word problems to two right triangles and to angles of 30°, 45° and 60°. |
|
Mensuration (10 marks) Areas of sectors and segments of a circle, and the surface area and volume of two solids joined together. Segment problems are restricted to central angles of 60°, 90° and 120°. |
|
Statistics and Probability (11 marks) Mean, median and mode of grouped data and the classical definition of probability. Bimodal data is kept out of the paper, and most of the marks lost here go to arithmetic. |

Who asks for Class 10 maths tuition
The same subject arrives with four quite different requests, and the first lesson looks different in each of them.
Students taking Mathematics Standard (041)
Standard is the paper for anyone who may carry maths into Class 11. CBSE's question paper design for 041 puts 19 of the 80 marks on applying and 18 on analysing, evaluating and creating, so practising a fixed set of steps stops being enough.
Recommended:
Students taking Mathematics Basic (241)
Basic covers the same syllabus with a gentler paper: CBSE's design for 241 puts 60 of the 80 marks on remembering and understanding. Students here gain most from doing standard questions quickly, accurately and without panic.
Recommended:
Students on ICSE or a state board
An ICSE student writes a three-hour paper with matrices, GST and shares and dividends in it. A Maharashtra SSC student writes Algebra and Geometry as two papers on two days. The tuition has to follow the paper the school entered them for.
Recommended:
A student whose marks are slipping
Maths marks usually fall one chapter at a time, and by the time a report card shows it the missing idea is two months old. The first lesson is often spent simply finding the step the student can no longer do.
Recommended:
The five units that decide a Class 10 maths result
Marks below are from CBSE's course structure for 2026-27. Algebra and Geometry carry 35 of the 80 marks between them, which is why a tutor usually opens there.

- •Substitution and elimination
- •Discriminant and nature of roots
- •nth term and sum of an AP
Common Sticking Points
A student can solve any quadratic handed to them in symbols and still freeze when the same thing arrives as a sentence about ages or a field. The step from sentence to equation is rarely taught slowly enough.
Marks in the CBSE paper
20 of 80 marks
Marks per unit are set by the board and move when the syllabus is revised. ICSE and the state boards weigh the same topics their own way, so a tutor works from the paper the student is entered for.

The lines that earn the marks
From a sentence to an equation
- a number xits squareis 12 more than 4 times itx² = 4x + 12
- x² − 4x − 12 = 0a = 1, b = −4, c = −12D = 16 + 48 = 64
- √64 = 8x = (4 ± 8) / 2x = 6 or x = −2
The check a tutor asks for
A rectangular plot is 3 m longer than it is wide, and its area is 70 m².
Question: Which root is the answer here, and why is the other one dropped?
Answer: The width solves x² + 3x − 70 = 0, giving x = 7 or x = −10. A width cannot be negative, so the plot is 7 m by 10 m. Writing that last sentence, and saying why the negative root is rejected, carries a mark of its own.
An original example. Board papers and textbook questions are worked in the lesson itself.
Five places the Class 10 year goes wrong
These come up in almost every Class 10 maths lesson, and none of them is about how clever the student is.
The answer is right and the marks are not there
Why it happens
Board marking follows written steps. A proof set down as a paragraph, a construction with no steps listed, or a final number with no statement of what it means will all lose marks the student is certain they earned.
What helps
The tutor marks the student's own script against the board's scheme, out loud, so the student sees each mark that was available and not claimed. After three or four papers the habit of writing the step settles in.
Arithmetic slips inside a question that was understood
Why it happens
A statistics table, a surface area sum or a long quadratic involves twenty small operations, and one of them goes wrong. The student then rereads the method, which was correct, and never rereads the addition.
What helps
The tutor insists on a second route for every answer: a rough estimate before calculating, substituting the root back into the equation, totalling the frequency column a second time from the bottom up.
Word problems that never become equations
Why it happens
This is the single biggest gap in Algebra, which carries 20 of the 80 CBSE marks. Naming the unknown and writing one relation at a time is a separate skill from solving, and school pace rarely allows for practising it on its own.
What helps
For a couple of weeks the tutor works only on translation: read the sentence, write what x stands for, write one equation, stop there. Solving comes back once building the equation has become automatic.
Geometry stored as pictures, with the reasons missing
Why it happens
Similar triangle questions return with the figure rotated or reflected. A student who learned the picture does not recognise it once it is turned around, because what was stored was a drawing and never the condition that made the triangles similar.
What helps
The tutor gives the same theorem inside three different figures in one sitting and asks each time which criterion applies and why. Recognition improves much faster this way than by rereading the chapter.
Choosing between Standard and Basic without thinking it through
Why it happens
The two codes share a syllabus, so in Class 9 the choice feels like a formality. Schools normally ask for Mathematics Standard before allowing maths in Class 11, and a student who took Basic and later wants a science or commerce stream with maths has a harder route.
What helps
Early in Class 10 the tutor puts real questions from both papers in front of the student. The decision then rests on evidence from their own work and on what they hope to study later.
A tutor's first job is working out which of these is happening. The remedies are different, and treating a presentation problem as a revision problem wastes a term.
How tuition for this subject is arranged
Every Class 10 maths request moves through the same settled steps, from the first message to the weekly lesson.
The board comes first in the request
A Class 10 maths request begins with the board and the code: CBSE 041 or 241, ICSE, UP Board, Maharashtra SSC, Madhyamik. Edutara then looks for a tutor who has taught that paper, at home or online.
An hour on the chapter you are stuck in
An hour spent on the chapter the student is actually stuck in tells you more about a tutor than any description of them could. Should a different tutor suit better, in October or in February, Edutara makes the change free of charge.
A fee Edutara sets
Edutara sets the fee for Class 10 maths lessons in your city, shares it at enrolment and bills it monthly, and pays the tutor for every lesson.
Tutors pay nothing to teach here
Applying costs a tutor nothing. There is no joining fee and no charge for being introduced to a learner, and Edutara pays for every lesson taught. That rule is permanent.
One learner in the room
Lessons are one tutor with one student. In maths that matters because the tutor watches the hand while it writes, and a wrong step is caught in the minute it happens.
What we look for in a Class 10 maths tutor
The bar is subject knowledge that runs well past the syllabus, and the patience to sit through a slow solution without taking the pen away.
- A degree, or a degree in progress, with mathematics in it and fluency far beyond Class 10 level
- Knows the board the student sits: the CBSE course structure, or the ICSE, UP Board, SSC or Madhyamik paper
- Can write a theorem proof the way a marking scheme reads it, and teach a student to do the same
- Willing to go back into Class 9 material at the student's pace when that is where the gap is
- Outside the school system: Section 28 of the RTE Act, 2009 keeps serving school teachers from tutoring privately
How a tutor teaches Class 10 maths
Solve one, write one
The tutor works a question through completely while the student watches, then hands over the next question of the same kind. Watching a solution and producing one are separate skills, and the board tests the second.
Backwards from the marking scheme
Work is checked against the way marks are awarded, step by step, so the student learns what an examiner is looking for on the page and stops handing in answers that were complete only in their head.
A weekly return to old chapters
Class 10 maths is cumulative, and a chapter finished in July is examined in February. Each week closes with a short set from an older unit, so nothing has to be learned again from the beginning in January.
Mistakes kept in one place
Slips go into a running list at the back of the notebook, sorted by the kind of error. By December that list says plainly what the last few weeks should be spent on, and it is different for every student.
A home tutor, a coaching class, or working alone
The trade-offs a Class 10 student actually weighs in maths, each format judged on the work it gets done before the board paper.

Questions Class 10 students ask about maths
On the board, the papers, the second examination window and how tuition is usually run through the year.
- Should I take Mathematics Standard or Mathematics Basic?
- Both codes follow the same syllabus. The difference is how CBSE sets the paper. For Standard (041) the question paper design puts 19 of the 80 marks on applying and 18 on analysing, evaluating and creating. For Basic (241) those figures are 12 and 8, with 60 marks resting on remembering and understanding. Schools normally ask for Standard before allowing maths in Class 11, so a student who might take a stream with maths in it should weigh this carefully. A tutor can put real questions from both papers in front of the student in the first few weeks, which usually settles the question faster than a discussion does.
- I understand everything in class and still score badly. Why?
- This is the commonest Class 10 maths complaint, and it usually has little to do with understanding. Marks in a board paper are given for written steps. A student who does the thinking in their head and writes three lines will be marked below a student who thinks less clearly and writes seven. Add one arithmetic slip in a long statistics table and the gap grows again. A tutor fixes it by marking the student's own answers against the board's scheme while the student watches. It is uncomfortable for about a week, and then it works.
- Do state board students need something different?
- Yes, and the differences are structural. Maharashtra SSC sets maths as two papers, Algebra and Geometry, written on separate days: in March 2026 they fell on the 6th and the 9th. UP Board sets a 70-mark written paper with 30 marks assessed inside the school. In West Bengal, Madhyamik maths carries 90 written marks with 10 from the school. The topics overlap heavily with CBSE. The paper pattern, the medium of instruction and the house style of the questions are each board's own, and tuition follows the paper the school has entered the student for.
- What do the 20 internal marks in CBSE maths come from?
- CBSE splits them four ways: a pen paper test and multiple assessment worth 5 each, a portfolio worth 5, and lab practical work worth 5, with the activities taken from the prescribed books. The school records them. These are the marks students most often leave on the table, because a portfolio and a lab file are finished work that anyone can complete on time if someone keeps track of the dates. A tutor can keep an eye on that file alongside the chapters.
- When are the Class 10 board exams in 2027?
- CBSE holds its first examination in February and the second in May, and publishes the date sheet on cbse.gov.in. When this page was written, on 23 September 2026, the 2027 date sheet was not out. West Bengal has announced Madhyamik 2027 for 15 to 25 February. Other boards publish their own schedules, usually between October and December. Treat any date you see elsewhere as provisional until the board's own notice carries it, and plan the year from the syllabus itself.
- What does CBSE's second board exam in May mean for maths?
- From the 2026 cycle CBSE holds two Class 10 examinations in a school year. The February one is compulsory for everyone. The May one is optional and is used to improve, and CBSE kept it to subjects whose external paper carries more than 50 marks, which includes mathematics at 80. The internal 20 marks are recorded by the school once in the year. In practice it means a student who lost a term to illness or a bad patch has another attempt at the same subject, and April turns into a short, targeted stretch of work on named units.
- How is Class 10 maths different on ICSE?
- CISCE sets one paper of three hours carrying 80 marks, with 20 marks of internal assessment. The Class 10 list includes ground the CBSE syllabus does not carry that year: GST, banking, shares and dividends, matrices, geometric progression, reflection and loci. The CISCE syllabus also notes that some questions may need logarithmic and trigonometric tables. An ICSE student therefore needs a tutor who has taught that paper. A tutor working only from NCERT will cover a fair part of the year and leave real gaps in it.
- How many lessons a week does Class 10 maths usually need?
- Most students begin with two lessons a week and add a third in the months before the board exam. What really decides it is how much Class 9 ground has to be repaired first, since a student missing factorisation and linear equations needs a few extra weeks at the start. Lesson length is agreed with the tutor, usually an hour to an hour and a half at home. The tutor sets the exact number after the first lesson, once they have watched the student work through a few questions.
- Is online maths tuition as useful as a tutor at home?
- For Class 10 maths the deciding factor is whether the tutor can watch the working as it happens. A shared whiteboard does that, and the pages can be saved and reread before a test. Online also widens the search: a Madhyamik student in a small town, or an ICSE student in a city where most tutors teach CBSE, will find far more choice. At home the gain is paper, a fixed desk and fewer interruptions. Plenty of students try both in the first weeks and then decide.
A complete guide to the Class 10 maths year
What the paper actually asks for
Read the CBSE syllabus closely and you find certain results marked with an instruction to prove them: the irrationality of √2, √3 and √5, the Basic Proportionality Theorem, that the tangent at any point of a circle is perpendicular to the radius through the point of contact, that the lengths of tangents drawn from an external point are equal, and the identity sin²A + cos²A = 1. Other results are given to be used and stated without proof, including the criteria that make two triangles similar.
The syllabus also sets limits, and those limits are a gift to anyone planning revision. Heights and distances problems use no more than two right triangles, and the angles of elevation or depression are only 30°, 45° and 60°. Area of a segment is restricted to central angles of 60°, 90° and 120°. Surface areas and volumes cover combinations of any two of cubes, cuboids, spheres, hemispheres and right circular cylinders or cones. In statistics, bimodal situations are avoided.
Knowing this changes how a student practises. The proof list is short enough to be learned properly, line by line, and a question outside those limits has come from an older paper or from a textbook working beyond the syllabus.
Practical Tips
- Copy the proof list onto one page and keep it inside the geometry notebook.
- Practise heights and distances with only two triangles, which is all the paper allows.
- Learn the three methods for mean, because the paper can ask for a named one.
- Write the figure before the first line of any geometry or trigonometry answer.
How the months usually fall
April to July is when Class 9 gaps can still be repaired without costing anything. A student who cannot factorise comfortably will struggle with quadratic equations in September, and the repair takes two weeks in May and two months in December.
From August to November the school is moving through the heavier units. This is the time to keep up chapter by chapter and to start the internal assessment file properly: the portfolio and the lab activities are worth 10 of the 20 internal marks between them, and they are finished work with deadlines, which makes them the easiest marks in the subject to protect.
December and January belong to whole papers. Three hours at a stretch is a physical skill as much as a mathematical one, and students who have never sat that long find their accuracy falling away in the last hour. February is the first examination. For CBSE students there is a second window in May, and the weeks in between are best spent on the specific units where marks were lost, leaving the settled chapters alone.
A home tutor, a coaching class, or on your own
Most Class 10 students end up combining two of these. What matters is being clear about what each one gives you, and about the specific weakness you are trying to fix.

If they lose the thread in class and stop asking, one-to-one is the thing that works.
Mistakes that cost marks in February
None of these is about ability. Each one is a habit, and habits can be changed inside a term if somebody is watching for them.
Mistakes & Solutions
Skipping the figure in geometry and trigonometry questionsDraw and label it first, every single time, even when the question feels obvious. In heights and distances the figure is most of the answer, and an unlabelled sketch is worth nothing to the examiner.Reciting proofs word for word and losing the order of the stepsAsk at each line why that line is allowed to follow the one above. A proof learned as an argument survives a rotated figure and a changed letter; a recited one does not.Leaving the portfolio and lab file until the last fortnightThose two carry 10 of the 20 internal marks. Keep the file moving alongside the chapters and finish activities the week they are taught, while the work is still fresh.Practising only from solved examplesSolved examples build recognition and hide the gap in independent work. Close the book and attempt unseen questions, then check, because that is the condition the board paper creates.Treating Mathematics Basic as a simpler syllabusThe syllabus is the same; the paper is set differently. A student on 241 still studies every unit, and the saving comes entirely from the kind of question asked.
