What is

Class 10 science

Class 10 science is one subject with three sciences inside it. On CBSE it is Science (086): a three-hour paper of 80 marks with 20 marks of internal assessment, and those 80 marks are shared out unit by unit, from chemical substances down to natural resources. ICSE hands the same ground to three separate papers, physics, chemistry and biology. UP Board writes it as 70 marks of theory with a 30-mark practical examination, and Maharashtra carries it as two books and two papers. The science is the same everywhere. The paper in front of you is what changes, and Class 10 tuition has to serve both.

Key Points

  • CBSE Science (086) carries 80 marks of theory and 20 marks of internal assessment in 2026-27.

  • In that paper chemistry and biology take 25 marks each, light 12, current 13 and the environment 5.

  • ICSE sets physics, chemistry and biology as three papers of two hours, 80 marks each, with 20 marks of practical work.

  • UPMSP sets Class 10 science at 70 marks written with a 30-mark practical examination.

  • Bihar Board's matric science paper opens with 80 objective questions, of which any 40 are answered.

Format Options

Two ways a science lesson runs

Science needs a table, a notebook and somebody watching the working as it happens. Both formats give you that. The choice is about travel time and where the apparatus sits.

  1. Duration: Usually 60 to 90 minutes, agreed with the tutor

    Tuition at your home

The tutor comes home, sits across the table and reads the working line by line. Diagrams get corrected while they are being drawn, and a simple experiment such as testing pH with lemon juice can be set up on a kitchen table.

    • Working read line by line, as you write it
    • Diagrams corrected while they are being drawn
    • Lesson times set around school and school tests
  2. Duration: Usually 60 minutes, agreed with the tutor

    Online lessons

Lessons run on a video call with a shared whiteboard, so a ray diagram or a circuit is drawn together on screen. A photograph of your answer sheet can be marked inside the same lesson, question by question.

    • Shared whiteboard for ray and circuit diagrams
    • Answer sheets marked from photographs
    • Useful where no science tutor lives nearby

What a Class 10 science tutor covers

The ground below follows CBSE's Science (086) syllabus for 2026-27. ICSE and the state boards rearrange the same material, and a tutor works from the syllabus your own board publishes.

CBSE marks three areas as formative only for 2026-27: periodic classification of elements, evolution, and the motor, generator and electromagnetic induction. Schools teach them and the year-end paper leaves them out.

Who It Is For

Who comes for Class 10 science tuition

Science is compulsory, and for many students it is the subject that decides which stream opens up in Class 11. So the reasons one learner asks for help can look nothing like the next learner's.

CBSE student heading to the February paper

The first board examination of Class 10 is compulsory for every CBSE candidate and it comes in February. Tuition here is about finishing the syllabus early, then living inside past papers and the marking scheme.

Recommended:

Unit-wise revisionPast papers under a clockNumericals every lesson

ICSE student sitting three science papers

Physics, chemistry and biology come as separate papers with separate preparation and separate practical work. Most ICSE students start with whichever of the three is slipping, and the other two often follow.

Recommended:

Physics, Science Paper 1Chemistry, Science Paper 2Biology, Science Paper 3

State board student

UP Board, Bihar Board, Maharashtra's SSC and the rest each set their own paper, their own practical marks and their own language of instruction. What helps is a tutor who prepares you for that paper.

Recommended:

Your board's paper patternPractical and project marksAnswering in the school language

Candidate appearing in CBSE's May examination

CBSE allows a passed and eligible candidate to improve in up to three subjects at the second examination in May, and science is on that list. Those weeks are short, so the plan has to be narrow and exact.

Recommended:

Five units, five weights

What the Class 10 science paper actually weighs

CBSE gives every unit a fixed number of marks out of 80, and the units are nowhere near equal. This is the table revision time should be divided by.

Chemical Substances: Nature and Behaviour

U1

Reactions and equations, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, and carbon compounds. It shares the top weight in the paper, and it is the unit where a single equation decides the mark.

Core Topics

  • โ€ขBalancing chemical equations
  • โ€ขpH in everyday life
  • โ€ขReactivity series
  • โ€ขHomologous series and functional groups
  • โ€ขSoaps and detergents

Common Sticking Points

An equation has to be balanced, carry the right products and show the state of each substance. A candidate who knows the reaction still drops marks when one of those three is missing.

Marks out of 80 (CBSE)

25 marks

Weights are from CBSE's Science (086) curriculum for Class X, 2026-27. UPMSP publishes the same five units out of 70 marks, with 20 each for the chemistry and biology units. ICSE splits the ground into three papers instead.

A 6 ohm resistor and a 3 ohm resistor are joined in parallel across a 6 V battery.

Question: What current does the battery supply?

Answer: The equivalent resistance is 2 ohm, so the current is 3 A. Write it on three lines: the formula, the substitution with units, and the answer with its unit. Each of the three lines is worth a mark.

Where Class 10 science leaks marks

The four places marks actually go missing

None of these is about how clever a student is. Each one is a habit, and a habit can be turned around inside a few weeks of lessons.

Challenge

Physics numericals written as one final number

A common sticking point

Root cause

Current, resistance, power, mirror and lens questions are all multi-step. The marking scheme pays separately for the formula, the substitution and the unit, so an answer that shows the last number alone collects a fraction of what the student actually worked out.

What helps

The tutor makes three lines compulsory from the first week: formula, substitution with units, answer with unit. Rough work moves to the margin, and the shape of the answer then holds even when the paper gets tense.

Challenge

Equations learnt by heart, then written unbalanced

A common sticking point

Root cause

Class 10 chemistry is a chain. Reactions and equations hold up acids and bases, metals and non-metals, and carbon compounds, so a student who balances from memory alone comes apart the moment a question swaps one reactant.

What helps

Balancing gets practised as a skill, a few equations in every lesson, with the products predicted before they are written and state symbols added at the end. The same habit then carries the metallurgy and carbon chapters.

Challenge

Biology answers with no diagram, or a diagram with no labels

A common sticking point

Root cause

The world of living carries as many marks as the whole of chemistry in CBSE's paper, and much of it is asked through diagrams: the excretory system, the reflex arc, a flower, the human eye. The labels carry marks of their own.

What helps

In the lesson the diagram is drawn from memory, then labelled, then explained in two lines. Eight or nine diagrams repeat across boards and years, and repeating them through the session turns them into safe marks.

Challenge

Ray diagrams drawn without the sign convention

A common sticking point

Root cause

In light, the sign convention decides where the image lands and whether it is real or virtual. A student who draws the diagram as a remembered picture has nothing to check the calculation against when the two disagree.

What helps

The convention is drilled on the diagram before the formula appears: distances measured from the pole, direction marked, values substituted with their signs. Diagram and calculation are then read against each other.

How we look for the right tutor

How a science tutor is found for you

Five plain steps take a Class 10 science request from the first message to a weekly lesson, with nothing hiding behind them.

  1. You name the board, the class and the subject

You tell us it is Class 10 science and which board you sit: CBSE, ICSE, UP Board, Bihar Board, Maharashtra's SSC or another. The board decides the paper, so it decides who is the right person to teach it.

  2. We look for a tutor who teaches exactly that

The search is for someone who has taught Class 10 science on your board, who can come to your home or teach online, and whose hours fit around school and school tests.

  3. A numerical and a diagram in hour one

Science shows its cracks quickly: ask for a numerical and a diagram in the first hour and you will know how this tutor teaches. If that hour, or any week after it, points to a different tutor, Edutara finds one free of charge.

  4. Edutara sets the fee and pays the tutor

What a Class 10 science lesson costs depends on the board, the subject and the city. Edutara tells you the amount at enrolment and bills it on one invoice.

  5. Tutors pay nothing to apply or to teach

No joining fee and no charge for being put in touch with a learner, and every lesson is paid by Edutara. That holds for every tutor on this site and it will stay that way.

What we look for in a Class 10 science tutor

This subject asks for somebody who can move between three sciences inside one hour and still mark an answer the way a board examiner marks it.

What we look for in a tutor
  • A degree in science or engineering, with the confidence to teach physics, chemistry and biology in a single lesson.
  • Working knowledge of the board the learner sits, its paper pattern and its practical or internal assessment.
  • Practice in marking answers step by step, giving credit for the working, the way a board examiner does.
  • Comfort in drawing and correcting ray diagrams, circuit diagrams and biology diagrams by hand.
  • Section 28 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 keeps serving school teachers out of private tuition.
  • That leaves the people we do look for: science graduates, postgraduate students, retired teachers and tutors working outside the school system.

How the subject is taught in a lesson

Concept first, then the paper

The idea is built until the learner can explain it in their own words, and only then is it turned into the shape the board asks for. Understanding with no answer technique still loses marks, and answer technique with no understanding falls over the moment a question is set in a new way.

Numericals in every lesson

Physics and the calculation parts of chemistry get a short set in every single lesson, even during the weeks given to biology, so that the arithmetic and the unit work stay warm right through the session.

The practical file treated as marks

Practical work, project and internal assessment carry real marks in every board, and they are the marks most often lost by falling behind. The tutor keeps the record moving with the chapters, so it is complete well before submission week.

FAQ

Questions Class 10 students ask about science

Board rules, practical marks and how lessons work. Where an answer rests on a board rule, the board's own document is the one we have read.

Does CBSE really hold two Class 10 board examinations now?
Yes. From 2026 CBSE conducts Class 10 in two sittings. Appearing in the first examination, in February, is compulsory for every candidate. A candidate who has passed and is eligible may then appear again in May to improve in up to three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages. CBSE has also put in writing that a candidate who misses three or more subjects in the first examination cannot sit the second one, and waits for the following February. So the year is planned around February, and May is treated as a repair window.
I am on ICSE. Is Class 10 science one subject or three?
Three. Under Science (52), ICSE sets physics, chemistry and biology as separate papers. CISCE's syllabus gives each paper two hours and 80 marks, with 20 marks for internal assessment of practical work. Each paper opens with a compulsory section of short answers on the whole syllabus, and a second section where a few questions out of six are attempted. Tuition usually starts with whichever paper is slipping, and the other two often join the timetable later.
How is the Bihar Board Class 10 science paper set out?
BSEB's model question paper for the 2026 matric examination shows science, subject code 112, as an 80-mark paper of 2 hours 45 minutes with 15 extra minutes for reading. Section A holds 80 objective questions, of which any 40 are answered, one mark each. Section B holds 24 short-answer questions, eight each from physics, chemistry and biology, with four to be attempted from each, and six long-answer questions. Half the paper is decided on an OMR sheet, and that rewards a very different kind of revision.
Can practicals be done in home tuition?
Some of them can. Finding the pH of lemon juice, water and a sodium bicarbonate solution, watching soap behave differently in hard and soft water, tracing a ray through a glass slab: all of these sit within reach of a table at home. The rest, and the record that carries the marks, belong to the school laboratory. What the tutor makes sure of is that you can explain every experiment on your board's list well enough for the viva and for the paper.
How are the 20 internal assessment marks in CBSE science decided?
CBSE's Science (086) curriculum for 2026-27 splits those 20 marks four ways: periodic assessment 5, multiple assessment 5, portfolio 5, and subject enrichment, which is the practical work, 5. They are school marks, collected through the year. They are also the easiest marks in the subject to lose, because a practical file left until the last week is worth less than one kept current with the chapters. A tutor keeps that record moving alongside the teaching.
What is different about UP Board science in Class 10?
UPMSP's syllabus for the 2026-27 session sets Class 10 science as a written paper of 70 marks with a practical examination of 30 marks. Inside the practical, 15 marks come from an external examiner, covering three experiments, one each from physics, chemistry and biology, and a viva. The other 15 come from the school as project work and sessional work. The unit weights differ too: the chemistry and biology units carry 20 marks each out of 70, where CBSE gives them 25 out of 80.
How many lessons a week does Class 10 science need?
Two lessons a week carries most learners through the session, with a third added in the closing months when past papers begin. The shape matters more than the count: part of the hour on the new chapter, part on numericals or diagrams, and a few minutes reviewing the last lesson. A tutor sets this with you in the first week, and the timing is agreed between you and the tutor.
How much does Class 10 science tuition cost?
Edutara sets the lesson fee from the class, the subject and the city you are in, and you see it at enrolment. You watch the tutor teach in the first lesson, you pay Edutara on one invoice while Edutara pays the tutor, and a tutor change is free in any month.
Complete Guide

A complete guide to Class 10 science

  1. How the Class 10 science year is shaped

Most CBSE schools finish the syllabus somewhere around November, and pre-boards follow in December and January. February then brings the first board examination, which every candidate has to appear in. A plan that works runs backwards from there: chapters closed by November, December given to unit-wise revision, January spent on full papers written against a clock with the marking scheme open beside them.

The second examination in May changes the ending. A candidate who has passed may improve in up to three subjects, and science sits on that list along with mathematics, social science and languages. It is a genuine second chance and it is also a short one, roughly the weeks between the first result and the second paper. The steadier way to use it is as insurance, with February treated as the examination that counts.

On ICSE and on the state boards the calendar is its own, though the rhythm is similar: syllabus by winter, revision in the new year, past papers at the end. What changes is the paper, and a tutor should be working from your board's own syllabus document from the first lesson.

    Practical Tips

    1. Close the syllabus by November and keep December for unit-wise revision.
    2. Write at least five full papers against a clock before the board examination.
    3. Keep the practical file current with the chapters, because it carries marks of its own.
    4. Learn the eight or nine diagrams that repeat every year until you can draw them from memory.
  2. Three sciences, three ways of studying

Physics in Class 10 is arithmetic with meaning attached. Ohm's law, resistors in series and parallel, electric power, the mirror formula and the lens formula are all short calculations where the marks live in the working. Formula, substitution with units, answer with a unit: that is the whole discipline, and it has to become a reflex.

Chemistry is a chain. Reactions and equations hold up acids and bases, metals and non-metals, and carbon compounds, so a shaky beginning surfaces three chapters later as confusion about products. Balancing has to become automatic, and naming a reaction on sight has to come with it.

Biology reads like a story, which is why it gets revised last and costs the most. In CBSE's paper the world of living carries the same 25 marks as the whole chemistry unit, and a large share of it is asked through labelled diagrams and exact terms. Reading the chapter is pleasant. Drawing the nephron from memory is the thing that earns the mark.

    Mistakes & Solutions

Leaving biology to the last fortnight because the chapters read easily
Put biology into the weekly plan from the first month, and test it by drawing and labelling with the book closed.
Learning ray diagrams as remembered pictures
Build each one from the rules: the ray parallel to the axis, the ray through the centre of curvature, and the point where they meet.
Writing only the final number in a numerical
Insist on three lines every time: formula, substitution with units, answer with its unit. It is worth marks in every board.
  3. Choosing between a home tutor, a coaching batch and online lessons

Few students choose once. A student joins a batch in April, falls behind by August because the batch moves at its own speed, and asks for a home tutor in September when the pre-boards are visible on the calendar. Thinking about it earlier saves that lost term.

The question worth asking is where the learning actually breaks down. If the concepts are understood and the marks still come out low, the gap is in answer technique, and one-to-one correction fixes it fastest. If the concepts themselves are missing, a batch of forty gives no room to say so out loud, and that is exactly where an hour with one teacher pays for itself.

    Private tuitionAgreed with the tutor
The whole hour belongs to one learner
Working and diagrams corrected as they are written
Timing set around school and school tests
Travel time has to suit the tutor as well
A quiet corner at home is needed
    Coaching centreSet by the centre
A fixed weekly routine to follow
Regular tests with a class to measure against
The batch moves at one speed for everyone
Questions are hard to ask in a crowded room
Travel both ways eats into study time
    Online tuitionAgreed with the tutor
    No travel on either side
Reaches a subject teacher who lives in another city
Diagrams drawn together on a shared whiteboard
A steady connection is needed for a full hour
Apparatus has to be described from memory

There is no single right format for Class 10 science. There is the one that gets this learner's working corrected every week, on the board they actually sit, at a time they can keep.
