What is an English tutor job?

An English tutor job at Edutara is part-time work teaching one learner the English their own board examines. For a CBSE Class 10 learner that means two unseen passages, a formal letter, an analytical paragraph built on a chart, and the chapters of First Flight and Footprints without Feet. An ICSE learner brings a 300 to 350 word composition, a notice, an email and the Treasure Chest stories and poems. You teach from the learner's own textbook, at their home or on a live video call.

  • CBSE Class 10 English (code 184) is an 80-mark board paper with 20 marks of internal assessment.
  • In Classes 9 and 10, reading, writing with grammar and literature carry 20, 20 and 40 marks.
  • Class 12 English Core (code 301) asks for notices, invitations, job applications, articles and reports.
  • ICSE English Paper 1 covers composition, a letter, a notice, an email, comprehension and grammar.
  • Learners preparing for CUET-UG English practise passages of up to 300 words and verbal ability items.
Requirements

What a strong English tutor brings to the table

College students, graduates, retired teachers and teachers working outside schools all apply. No degree or years of experience are asked for: what counts is how well you handle English on the page and aloud.

Group 1

Command of written English

  • Accurate, clean prose that can model a formal letter or an article inside the board's word limit
  • Grammar you can explain plainly: tenses, modals, determiners, subject-verb concord and reported speech
  • The habit of reading a 400 to 450 word discursive passage and turning it into sharp questions
Group 2

Knowledge of the set books

  • Familiarity with First Flight, Footprints without Feet, Flamingo, Vistas, Hornbill and Snapshots for CBSE learners
  • Or with the ICSE Treasure Chest anthology and its Class 9 and Class 10 stories and poems
  • Awareness that NCERT's Kaveri now serves Class 9 and Poorvi serves Classes 6 to 8
Group 3

Patience with drafts and speech

  • Reading a learner's third draft of the same notice as carefully as the first
  • A calm, encouraging way of correcting pronunciation and fluency during speaking practice
Group 4

Ready for online lessons

  • A device with a camera and microphone, and a connection that holds a video call
  • A simple way to mark written answers held to the camera or shared as a photo

9 questions answered
  1. Which boards and classes will I teach as an English tutor?

Edutara learners study on CBSE, ICSE / ISC and state boards from Class 1 to Class 12, and English is asked for at every stage. The busiest years are Classes 9 to 12, when board papers weigh reading, writing and literature. College students, CUET-UG candidates and adults working on spoken English come too.

  2. Do I need to know the new Kaveri and Poorvi textbooks?

It helps. NCERT's Kaveri replaces Beehive and Moments as the single Class 9 English book, with 16 texts in place of 29, and Poorvi is the English textbook for Classes 6 to 8, taking over from Honeydew and An Alien Hand in Class 8. Some learners still carry the older readers, so teach from the book in their bag.

  3. How much of the board paper is writing and grammar?

In CBSE Class 10, Section B gives 20 of the 80 marks to writing with grammar: 10 marks of grammar items (10 out of 12 to attempt) and two 100 to 120 word tasks, a formal letter and an analytical paragraph on a chart or cue. Class 12 English Core gives 18 marks to creative writing. ICSE Paper 1 puts 20 marks on composition, 10 on a letter, 10 on a notice and email, and 20 on grammar.

  4. Can I teach ICSE English literature if I studied on CBSE?

Yes, provided you read the set texts. ICSE Paper 2 draws on a prescribed play and the Treasure Chest anthology. The Class 10 stories include The Elevator, The Girl Who Can, The Pedestrian and The Last Lesson, and the poems include Haunted Houses and When Great Trees Fall. The Last Lesson also sits in CBSE Class 12 Flamingo.

  5. How are English classes matched to me?

A learner, or whoever registers the learner, tells Edutara the class, board, subject and whether lessons are at home or online. Edutara looks for a tutor who teaches exactly that English and puts the two of you in touch. The learner keeps going for as long as the lessons work, and Edutara pays you for each one, starting with the first.

  6. Can I tutor English online from a smaller town?

Yes. Online lessons are a live video call with one learner, from the learner's own syllabus and textbook. You explain on a shared screen or a whiteboard app, and the learner shares a written answer as a photo or holds it to the camera for you to mark.

  7. Can I help with listening, speaking and project marks?

Yes, and many learners ask for it. CBSE Class 10 gives 5 internal marks to listening and speaking, judged on interactive competence, fluency, pronunciation and language. Class 12 English Core sets 5 marks for listening, 5 for speaking and 10 for a project with a write-up of up to 1,000 words and a viva.

  8. How does pay work for English classes?

The learner pays Edutara, and Edutara pays you for every English lesson you teach and log. A Class 9 grammar learner and a Class 12 Flamingo learner arrive as separate offers, and each one names its own rate for you to read before you say yes. Money for lessons never passes between you and the learner, and joining or receiving an English class costs you nothing.

  9. Can I fit English tuition around my college timetable?

Yes. Every English class is part-time and runs at hours agreed before you accept the offer, so evenings and weekends around lectures or a job work well. Take on as many learners as your week allows.
