Can I tutor while I am still in college?
Yes. Kolkata has run on student tutors for as long as anyone can remember, and a second year student who is steady in Class 9 maths is often exactly what a family is looking for. Apply for the classes and subjects you are sure of, keep the hours around your own lectures and practicals, and say plainly in the form how many evenings a week you can hold.
I teach at a school. Can I apply?
Anyone on a school's teaching staff is barred from giving private tuition. The bar comes from **Section 28 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009**, and it holds for a school in Bhowanipore exactly as it holds for one anywhere else in the country. Retired school teachers are welcome to apply, and so is anyone teaching outside the school system: at a college, at a coaching centre, or on their own.
Which boards should I be ready for?
Four, and in Kolkata they sit close together. WBBSE sets Madhyamik, which Class 10 writes from 15 to 25 February 2027. WBCHSE runs Higher Secondary in semesters now, and the Class 12 third semester papers were held from 21 September to 14 October 2026, with practical work from 22 January 2027. CBSE schools and CISCE schools, which write ICSE and ISC, are thick on the ground in the older central and southern neighbourhoods. Take the pattern you know and say so in the form.
Can I teach in Bengali?
Yes, and in this city that is often the whole point. A great many learners follow the syllabus in Bengali and write their science papers in it, and they get stuck when a chapter was explained in a language they are still translating in their head. English medium and Hindi medium learners are looking too. Name the languages you can teach in when you apply.
What will I be paid for a class?
The fee for the classes is settled between you and the family, and it usually turns on the class, the subject, and whether you are travelling to their home or teaching online. Edutara does not fix that amount and takes no share of it. The family pays you directly. Applying costs you nothing, there is no joining fee, and nothing is charged for putting you in touch with a learner.
Do I have to travel right across Kolkata?
No. You name the localities you can reach and that is what we work with. Most tutors here keep to one side of the city and one Metro or bus corridor, so a class in Ballygunge and a class in Kasba can sit in the same evening. If the travelling is the hard part, say you will teach online and hold your classes from where you are.
What if I can only give two evenings a week?
That is workable. Write the exact evenings and hours into the form, because a family here is usually fitting tuition around school, a coaching batch, and sometimes a music or drawing class as well. A tutor who says Tuesday and Friday, seven to half past eight, and then keeps to it, is easier to place than one who only says they are flexible.
I have never tutored before. Does that count against me?
No. Tell us honestly what you are comfortable with. A postgraduate in chemistry who has never taught can be steady in Class 11 and out of depth in Class 8, and it happens the other way round just as often. Begin with the classes you can carry from the first chapter to the last, and add subjects once you have taught for a few months.
