Four systems run side by side in this city. The state pair is WBBSE, which conducts Madhyamik at the end of Class 10, and WBCHSE, which conducts the Higher Secondary examination at the end of Class 12. Alongside them sit CBSE and the CISCE examinations, ICSE in Class 10 and ISC in Class 12. A tutor who has taught only one of them will feel the difference in the first week: the question papers, the weight given to written answers and the internal marks all differ.

The Madhyamik routine for 2027 is already out. The papers run from 15 to 25 February 2027, one subject a day from 10.45 in the morning, with the first fifteen minutes for reading the paper. History falls on 18 February, Geography on 19 February, Mathematics on 22 February, Physical Science on 23 February and Life Science on 24 February. The board has also set the age rule for that year: a candidate must have been born on or before 31 October 2012.

CBSE has changed the shape of Class 10. There are now two board examinations in the same academic year, the February one that every candidate sits and an optional one in May for improving marks in up to three subjects. CISCE usually publishes the ICSE and ISC timetables in November for examinations that begin in February. For a family, the practical effect is that the tuition calendar is set by the board your school is affiliated to, and nothing else.

WBCHSE has split the Higher Secondary course into four semesters: Semesters I and II in Class 11, Semesters III and IV in Class 12. The odd semesters are answered entirely in multiple-choice form on OMR sheets, and the even semesters in short and descriptive answers. That is two different exam skills inside one course, and a student who is fluent in long answers can still lose marks in an MCQ paper for want of speed.

In the 2026-27 session the Class 12 third semester papers were held from 21 September 2026, with three dates later shifted to 12, 13 and 14 October because of by-elections. The fourth semester follows in the new year, with project and practical examinations scheduled from 22 January to 13 February 2027 and the theory routine announced by the Council. Class 11 first semester examinations are conducted by the schools themselves inside a window the Council fixes, so the date sheet comes from your own school office.

For tuition this matters in a very ordinary way. From July onwards a Class 12 student is practising options and elimination for the OMR paper, and from November the same student has to write full answers again. A tutor who plans the year around a single February examination will leave that student unprepared in September.

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board, at DB-118 in Sector I, Salt Lake, runs more of this city's admissions than most families realise. WBJEE decides engineering, technology, architecture and pharmacy seats in the state, including the undergraduate seats at Jadavpur University, which fills them through WBJEE counselling. The 2026 paper was held on 24 May, in two shifts, with Mathematics in the morning and Physics with Chemistry in the afternoon, and results came on 17 June.

The same board also conducts PUBDET, the entrance test for undergraduate courses at Presidency University, and JENPAS-UG for nursing, paramedical and allied science seats across the state, which in 2026 was held on 7 June in pen-and-paper form. Alongside all of this sit the national examinations run by the NTA: JEE Main in sessions, NEET-UG for medical seats and CUET-UG for central university admissions.

A Class 11 student in Kolkata is therefore often preparing for three calendars at once: the school semesters, a state entrance test and a national one. Tuition that treats them as one undivided course tends to collapse in Class 12. What works is a plan that names each examination, its month and its question pattern, and then decides which weeks belong to which.

The habit is measurable. In the Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education, 2025, the National Statistics Office found 74.6 per cent of West Bengal's school students taking private coaching at some level, against 27 per cent for India as a whole. At the secondary stage the state figure was 90.5 per cent. In Kolkata this shows up as the evening rhythm of whole neighbourhoods: children walking to a sir's house at six, a room of twenty working through the same sums, parents waiting outside on scooters.

That volume has a cost. In a batch of twenty the tutor cannot watch one child write, and a weak chapter can be carried unnoticed from Class 9 into the board year. One-to-one teaching at home is what Edutara arranges: one tutor watching one learner write, in the room where the studying actually happens, so a weak chapter is caught in the week it first shows.

There is also a legal line worth knowing. Section 28 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 bars a teacher employed in a school from giving private tuition. Edutara therefore looks for college students, graduates, retired teachers and teachers outside the school system, and never approaches a serving school teacher.

Distance on a map means very little here. A tutor coming from Shyambazar to Ballygunge in the evening may spend an hour in traffic for a lesson of the same length, which is why matches made across the city rarely last a full academic year. The metro has changed some of this: the north to south line carries students from Dakshineswar down through Tollygunge, the east to west line runs from Howrah Maidan under the Hooghly to Salt Lake Sector V, the Orange Line runs along the Bypass side, and the Purple Line links Behala with Majerhat.

Monsoon is the other constraint. Heavy rain floods low stretches in the south and centre, buses slow down, and a seven o'clock lesson becomes an eight o'clock lesson or no lesson at all. Families who plan for this keep one online session a week in reserve, so that a washed-out Tuesday does not push the whole week's plan into the weekend.

When you tell us your locality, tell us the realistic timings too: when the school bus returns, when the ground-floor room is free, when the family eats. A tutor who can be there at that hour will stay for the year, and that steadiness is worth more than any single brilliant lesson.

The Kolkata school year bends around Durga Puja. In 2026 Mahalaya falls on 10 October and the Puja days follow in the third week, and the board's model holiday list gives state-aided schools a Puja vacation from 15 October to 12 November, running from Maha Chaturthi to the day after Bhatridwitiya. Summer holidays that year are short by comparison, six days in May, so this autumn break is the long one.

For a Class 10 or Class 12 candidate that break falls at the worst possible moment, three or four months before the board papers. What most families do is keep a reduced schedule: two lessons a week instead of four, revision instead of new chapters, and a restart in the week after Kali Puja. Tutors who live outside the city travel home during this period, so it is worth agreeing in September what will happen in October.

December brings the board's own Test Paper book, which Madhyamik candidates collect free through their schools, and it sets the tone of the last two months: past questions, timed writing and correction. A tutor who plans the year backwards from February will already have kept those weeks clear.

The 2011 Census recorded Bengali as the mother tongue of about 61 per cent of Kolkata's residents, Hindi of close to 23 per cent and Urdu of about 13 per cent, with Odia, Gujarati and Punjabi households making up much of the rest. Around Burrabazar, Posta and Jorasanko the everyday language of trade is Hindi; in Bhowanipore, Gujarati and Punjabi families have lived for generations; in the southern neighbourhoods Bengali dominates the lane and English dominates the textbook.

This has a direct effect on tuition. A child in a Hindi-speaking family who studies in an English-medium CBSE school often understands the idea in one language and has to write it in another, and the marks lost are marks of expression. At Madhyamik, Hindi is available as a first language, so a Hindi-medium student sits the same state board examination in their own language, with English as the second language paper.

So when a family asks for a tutor, the language question is a real one. Tell us what is spoken at home, what the school teaches in, and which language your child answers best in. Bengali as a second or third language for a child from a Hindi-speaking home is a common request in Kolkata, and so is spoken English for a parent who wants to follow what the school is saying.
