Home tuition in Mumbai, from Colaba to Dahisar and Mulund

Four school systems run side by side in this city and a family often chooses between them within one neighbourhood. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education sets the SSC exam at the end of Class 10 and the HSC exam at the end of Class 12, and its Mumbai division is one of nine divisional boards in the state. CBSE and the CISCE boards, ICSE and ISC, are strong here too, and a handful of schools run IGCSE and the IB Diploma.

The civic schools have joined that spread. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation runs 22 schools it calls Mumbai Public Schools across four boards, 19 on CBSE, one on ICSE, one on IGCSE and one on the IB, with admissions opening online in January. Its older schools teach in eight mediums, Marathi, Hindi, English, Urdu, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, as the Praja Foundation's report on municipal education in Mumbai records, and English medium enrolment has been the one that keeps growing.

For a tutor this matters more than it sounds. The subject may be called Class 10 Science everywhere, while the paper, the textbook and the weight given to a diagram differ from board to board. When you ask for a home tutor, the board is as important as the class.

The state board announced the probable windows for the next cycle in a press note on 17 September 2026. The HSC written papers are set to run from 8 February to 16 March 2027, with practicals, orals and internal assessment from 20 January to 6 February. The SSC written papers run from 15 February to 11 March 2027, with practicals and orals from 28 January to 13 February. The subject-wise day plan comes later, so revision should be planned against the window and firmed up when the detailed timetable is published.

CBSE families now work to a two-sitting year in Class 10: a compulsory exam in February and March and an optional second attempt in May for improving a few subjects. The date sheet for 2027 is expected from the board towards the end of 2026. ICSE and ISC papers fall in the same February to March stretch.

For entrance exams, the National Testing Agency's calendar released on 16 September 2026 puts JEE Main session 1 on 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30 January 2027, with 31 January held as a buffer. That calendar stops at March 2027, so the NEET-UG and CUET-UG dates for 2027 are still to be announced by the NTA. Maharashtra's own entrance test, the MHT CET, is set by the State CET Cell on the state board syllabus for Classes 11 and 12, with most of the weight on Class 12; it was held twice in 2026, in April and again in May, and the 2027 schedule is still to be notified.

Mumbai children leave school after Class 10 and join a junior college for Classes 11 and 12. Admission runs through the state's centralised online process at mahafyjcadmissions.in, where a learner registers, fills preferences and is allotted a seat in rounds, and the merit that decides it is the Class 10 result. That single number carries more weight here than in most Indian cities, because the well-known junior colleges take only the top of the list: the Free Press Journal's report on the 2024 lists showed commerce and science cut-offs in the high nineties at colleges in the island city and at Vile Parle.

The second thing that happens after Class 10 is the coaching year. Many junior colleges run integrated programmes with coaching institutes, and the Free Press Journal reported in June 2026 that the state is moving to strengthen biometric attendance in junior colleges because students enrolled in Class 11 and 12 spend most of their time at coaching centres. Whatever comes of that, the shape of the week is the same for the family: long hours in a hall, tests every weekend, and little room to ask a question twice.

Home tuition in these two years usually does one narrow job. It repairs the chapters that went past, it keeps the board syllabus from being crowded out by entrance preparation, and it gives a teenager one hour a week where saying I did not understand costs nothing.

Everything in Mumbai tuition is decided by the journey. The Western line carries the city from Churchgate to Dahisar, the Central line from CSMT to Mulund, the Harbour line out to Mankhurd, and the metro has begun to cut across them: Line 1 from Versova through Andheri to Ghatkopar, Lines 2A and 7 along the western suburbs, and Line 3, fully open since October 2025, running underground from Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR by way of Worli, Dadar, BKC and the airport. A tutor who lives two stations away can hold a 7 pm slot all year. A tutor who lives an hour away will start arriving late in July.

The school year adds its own rhythm. State board schools reopen in the middle of June, the first term runs to the end of October, the Diwali break follows, and the second term goes on to early May before the summer holidays. The monsoon sits inside the first term, and in a bad week the BMC closes schools and colleges on an IMD red alert, as it did on 19 August 2025. Planning for that in advance is simple: agree with the tutor at the start that lessons shift online when the city stops, so the week is not lost.

Festival weeks matter too. Ganeshotsav runs for ten days in the late monsoon and reshapes traffic, lanes and household routines across the city, and most families shift the lesson to another evening that week.

Mumbai homes are multilingual in a way a school timetable never shows. Marathi is the language of the state and its schools; Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu and Tamil are spoken at home in whole neighbourhoods; and a great many children now sit in English medium classrooms while their parents studied in another medium altogether. That gap is where a lot of Class 8 and Class 9 trouble begins: the child can read the chapter aloud and cannot explain it, and nobody at home can tell whether the understanding is there.

A home tutor who explains in the language the learner thinks in, and writes the answer in the language the paper demands, closes that gap quickly. It is worth saying plainly when you ask for a tutor: explain in Marathi, write in English, or explain in Hindi for a child who has just moved to the city and joined a CBSE school mid-year.

The state board is in the middle of a syllabus change. Maharashtra has begun aligning its school curriculum with the national framework, starting with Class 1, and the textbook bureau, Balbharati, issued new books for Classes 2, 3, 4 and 6 for the 2026-27 session in a circular from its Pune office in May 2026. Classes 5, 7, 9 and 11 are expected in the next cycle, with the remaining classes after that, so a child now in Class 6 and a child now in Class 8 are studying from books of different generations.

For families this has one practical consequence. An elder sibling's notes, a neighbour's guide book or a tutor's old question bank may be built on the previous syllabus. When you speak to a tutor, ask which edition of the textbook they are teaching from, and expect a good one to check the school's own book before the first lesson.

Section 28 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 bars a teacher employed in a school from giving private tuition, so the people who teach at home are college students, graduates, retired teachers and teachers working outside the school system. Mumbai has a lot of them. The University of Mumbai's colleges run across the city, IIT Bombay sits at Powai, and the engineering and chemical technology campuses at Matunga turn out graduates who stay in the city for work.
