Lucknow schools its children on three systems at once. The UP Board, run by the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad from Prayagraj, carries the largest share: according to the Free Press Journal, 53,37,778 candidates registered for its 2026 High School and Intermediate exams across the state. CBSE schools fill much of the newer city, and Lucknow has an unusually deep ICSE and ISC tradition in its older convent and city schools.

That tradition shows in scale as well as in age. According to Guinness World Records, City Montessori School in Lucknow is the largest school in the world by pupils, with 61,345 pupils across 21 campuses as of 10 August 2023, and it teaches CISCE, CBSE and Cambridge courses at different campuses. La Martiniere College, Loreto Convent and St Francis' College have sent ISC students out of this city for generations. A tutor who has taught only one of these systems will feel the difference in the first week, which is why the board is part of the request and not an afterthought.

The UP Board year ends early. Practical exams fall in January and the theory papers follow within weeks: in 2026 the High School and Intermediate papers ran from 18 February to 12 March, in two sittings a day, as reported when UPMSP released the timetable. The 2027 timetable is expected around November 2026 on upmsp.edu.in, and until UPMSP publishes it, February and March are the sensible assumption and nothing more.

CBSE families now plan around two dates. Class 10 sits a compulsory first examination in February and an optional second one in May for anyone wanting to improve, with the better score counted, under the twice-a-year scheme CBSE announced in 2025. ICSE and ISC papers run through February and March, with CISCE publishing its timetables a few months ahead.

Entrance exams stack on top of all this. The NTA calendar released in September 2026 places JEE Main 2027 Session 1 in the last week of January 2027, with a second session later in the year, and NEET-UG and CUET-UG dates are announced by NTA in their own time. For a Class 12 science student in Lucknow that means board practicals, a JEE session and board theory papers arriving inside about eight weeks.

Lucknow's winter interrupts schooling in a way an outsider underestimates. On 8 January 2026 the District Magistrate ordered every school in the district up to Class 8 closed until 10 January and set Classes 9 to 12 to run between 10 am and 3 pm, citing India Meteorological Department warnings of severe cold and thick fog, as the Free Press Journal reported. Orders of that kind arrive at short notice most winters, and they land precisely when board students can least afford a lost week.

The other end of the year does the same by heat. May and June push the afternoons out of use and schools take their long break, so families shift lessons to early morning or late evening and often keep them running straight through the holidays for a board year. The monsoon between July and September mainly costs travel time, with waterlogging on the low stretches of road. A tutor who lives near you loses less of the hour to all three.

Lucknow Metro's Red Line is the city's only working corridor: 21 stations over 22.878 km from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport to Munshi Pulia, opened in September 2017 and completed to its present length in March 2019. It threads the south-west and the centre well, through Transport Nagar, Alambagh, Charbagh, Hussainganj, Hazratganj, Vishwavidyalaya, Badshahnagar and Indira Nagar, which is why tutors living along it can take evening lessons on that axis without much trouble.

Much of the newer city sits away from that line. Gomti Nagar and its extension, the townships off Shaheed Path, Vrindavan Yojana and Jankipuram Extension are reached by road, and at six in the evening the road is the constraint. When you send a request, naming the locality and the crossing nearest to you does more for the search than naming the subject twice.

The coaching belt around Kapoorthala and Aliganj is where a large part of Lucknow's Class 11 and 12 cohort spends its evenings, along with graduates preparing for government and banking examinations. A batch is an efficient way to cover a syllabus and a poor way to fix one student's particular confusion, because the room cannot stop for it. Home tuition in this city is most often bought for exactly that repair job.

It works best when the two are pointed at the same target. Tell the tutor which batch your child attends and what it covered last week, and the home hour becomes revision with teeth instead of a second lecture. For board-year students the division many families settle on is simple: the batch carries the entrance syllabus, the home tutor keeps the board answers clean and the written work marked.

This is a university city, and that is where private tutors come from. The University of Lucknow, King George's Medical University, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Integral University and the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow together hold a large population of students and recent graduates, many of them from Hindi-medium school backgrounds themselves and comfortable teaching a UP Board child in the language the textbook uses.

The law sets one boundary clearly. Section 28 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 bars a teacher employed in a school from giving private tuition, so the search runs among college students, postgraduates, retired teachers and people who teach outside the school system. Tutors pay nothing to be part of this: no joining fee, no commission, no charge for being introduced to a family. Whatever is agreed for the lessons is paid by the family to the tutor.
