Home tuition in Patna for Bihar Board, CBSE and ICSE students

Patna studies under three boards. The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), whose offices are on Sinha Library Road in the city, sets the Matric exam at the end of Class 10 and the Intermediate exam at the end of Class 12, in Science, Arts and Commerce. Government schools and many private schools follow it, in Hindi or English medium.

CBSE is followed by the Kendriya Vidyalayas at Kankarbagh, Bailey Road and Danapur Cantonment and by many private schools, including some of the city's oldest mission schools: St. Michael's High School in Digha and Notre Dame Academy in Patliputra Colony both follow CBSE today. ICSE and ISC are taught at a smaller group, among them Don Bosco Academy on the Digha–Ashiana road and St. Xavier's High School at West Gandhi Maidan. St. Joseph's Convent High School in Bankipur runs two sections on one campus: ICSE in English and the Bihar Board in Hindi.

Language adds a second layer. Hindi is the common language of the city, the district administration describes Magahi as the area's native dialect, and CBSE and ICSE classrooms mostly teach in English. Put the board, the medium and the textbooks in use in your request, so the tutor prepares for the right papers from the first lesson.

BSEB works to an early calendar. For the 2026 exams, the sent-up exam, a school-level test that regular students must pass to sit the annual exam, began on 19 November 2025. Intermediate practicals ran from 10 to 20 January 2026, the Intermediate theory papers from 2 to 13 February and the Matric from 17 to 25 February. Results came on 23 March for the Intermediate and 29 March for the Matric.

In the 2026 papers, half the marks in a subject came from objective questions answered on an OMR sheet, with twice as many questions printed as a student had to attempt. Tuition for a Bihar Board student therefore mixes two kinds of practice: quick, accurate answers for the objective section and neatly argued written answers for the rest. BSEB announces the dates for the 2027 exams itself.

Patna is a coaching city. Branches of JEE and NEET institutes line Boring Road, Boring Canal Road and parts of Kankarbagh, while the lanes of Musallahpur Hat and Bhikhna Pahari, near Ashok Rajpath, are packed with classes for government job exams and with lodges for the students who come from across Bihar to attend them.

Bihar has told coaching centres more than once to keep school and college students out of classes during teaching hours, and a policy the state announced in June 2026 repeats the rule. For a student who attends both, the day runs from school into an evening batch, and home tuition has to find its slot in what is left.

A home tutor earns that slot by going back over the school's own chapters, by keeping the board syllabus moving when coaching races ahead on the entrance syllabus, and by answering the questions a student did not ask in a room of classmates. For an Intermediate Science student the tightest month is January: BSEB practicals, then JEE Main's first session (22 to 30 January 2027 in NTA's tentative calendar), then the board theory papers in early February.

Weather sets the rhythm of a Patna school year. In late April and again in late May 2026 the district administration shortened or suspended classes for younger children in the heat, and government schools closed for summer from 1 to 20 June. In the cold wave of early January 2026, classes up to Class 8 were suspended until 11 January and older students were taught only between 10:30 am and 3:30 pm.

The monsoon brings its own breaks. The rain of 28 July 2025 left Rajendra Nagar, Kankarbagh, Boring Road and Patliputra Colony under knee-deep water, and many schools stayed shut the next day. In autumn the state's 2026 calendar for government schools closes them for Durga Puja from 17 to 21 October and for Diwali and Chhath from 7 to 17 November.

Home tuition can run through all of this with a little planning. Agree a winter slot and a summer slot with the tutor, keep online lessons ready for flooded streets and closure days, and use the Diwali and Chhath break for revision, since the sent-up exam usually follows soon after.

Engineering aspirants in Patna take JEE Main, and Bihar's own B.Tech seats are filled through UGEAC counselling by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB), using JEE Main ranks. The NTA calendar published on 16 September 2026 places the first session of JEE Main 2027 on 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January, with the dates marked tentative.

Medical aspirants take NEET-UG, and BCECEB fills Bihar's state quota seats through UGMAC. After the May 2026 paper was cancelled, NEET-UG was held again on 21 June, and the Education Ministry has said the exam becomes a computer-based test from 2027. CUET-UG is the entrance for central universities such as Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University and the Central University of South Bihar in Gaya.

Younger children sit entrance tests too. Some Class 5 students in Patna prepare for JNVST, the Navodaya admission test; for Simultala Awasiya Vidyalaya, Bihar's residential school whose Class 6 test is set by BSEB; and for AISSEE, the Sainik Schools entrance, which the NTA calendar places on 31 January 2027.

Section 28 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 bars school teachers from private tuition. Bihar has added its own orders: in January 2024 the Education Department asked coaching centres for written undertakings that no government teacher taught there, and in June 2026 it barred government school teachers from private tuition and coaching.

Edutara therefore looks for tutors among college students, graduates, retired teachers and teachers who work outside the school system. The city has a large student population to draw on: Ashok Rajpath alone holds Patna College, Patna Science College, NIT Patna and Patna Medical College, and students come from all over Bihar for coaching and degrees.
