Can I tutor while I am still studying in a college in Lucknow?
Yes. Students from the University of Lucknow, the technical university at Jankipuram, Isabella Thoburn College and the degree colleges around the city take tuition in the evening, after their own classes. A family cares about two things: that you are sure of the subject, and that you come on the day you said you would. When your own examinations are close, say so at the start and fix fewer classes for those weeks instead of disappearing.
I teach at a school in Lucknow. Can I take tuition after school hours?
No, and the bar is a legal one. Section 28 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 bars a teacher who is serving in a school from taking private tuition or private teaching work, and it applies whether the school is run by the government, aided by it or entirely private. Retired teachers are welcome to apply. So is anyone who teaches outside the school system, in a degree college, a coaching centre or an institute.
Which boards will I be asked to teach?
Three, and they live side by side here. The UP Board, whose High School and Intermediate papers run through February and March and whose Hindi medium learners are a large part of the city. CBSE, followed by many of the newer schools in the trans-Gomti colonies. ICSE and ISC, which Lucknow has had for well over a century through schools like La Martiniere. Tell us which of the three you can teach, and say honestly if you have only ever studied one of them.
Do I have to travel all over the city?
No. You mark the areas you can reach, and nothing outside them is sent to you. Most tutors keep to one belt: Aliganj with Mahanagar and Nirala Nagar, or Indira Nagar with Munshipulia and Khurram Nagar, or Alambagh with Krishna Nagar and Kanpur Road. The metro's single line helps if your belt sits along it, since it runs from Munshipulia through Badshah Nagar and Hazratganj down to Charbagh, Alambagh and the airport.
How is the fee for a class decided?
You and the family agree it before the first class. It moves with the class, the subject, whether you teach at the learner's home or online, and the distance you cover. Edutara does not fix that amount, does not take a share of it and does not collect it, so what you settle with the family is what reaches you. There is nothing to pay to apply either, at any stage.
Can I teach online only, without travelling at all?
Yes. The form has a place to say that you teach online only, and your application is read that way. Online suits people who study far from the belt they want to teach in, and it makes the outer edges of the city workable, past Chinhat on Deva Road or beyond Ashiyana, where an evening visit would cost a tutor two hours of road.
I finished my degree years ago and have never taught anyone. Is that a problem?
It is not. Teaching one learner at a time is closer to explaining something to a younger cousin than to standing in front of a class. What you need is the subject itself, the patience to ask a learner to try the step again, and a plan for the week. Read two or three past papers of the board before your first class, so you know what the examiner is looking for, and start with the chapter the learner is weakest in.
When is the busiest part of a tuition year in Lucknow?
Two stretches. From about November, Class 10 and Class 12 learners begin serious revision for the board papers that start in February, and that is when a family looks hardest for a tutor. The second stretch opens with the new session, when a family has just seen a result and decides to fix the weak subject early instead of waiting for the next examination to arrive.
