What is home tuition in Chennai?

Home tuition in Chennai means one tutor coming to your house, or teaching you online, for the class and the syllabus you name. The city runs three school systems side by side: the Tamil Nadu state board with its common Samacheer Kalvi syllabus, CBSE, and ICSE and ISC under CISCE. A tutor who knows the paper the learner will actually sit is worth more than a tutor who knows the subject in general. Chennai also leans hard on the Class 12 public exam, because engineering admission in Tamil Nadu is decided on those marks. Lessons at home suit a city where an evening run from Adyar to Anna Nagar can take longer than the lesson, and online lessons cover the evenings when it takes longer still.

What it gives the learner

  • The hour belongs to one learner, spent on the chapters that are actually shaky.
  • One syllabus at a time, whether that is Samacheer Kalvi, CBSE, ICSE or ISC.
  • Timings that sit around school hours, coaching class and Chennai traffic.
  • A trial lesson first, so you watch the tutor teach before anything is settled.
  • The same tutor can carry a learner from Class 9 to the Class 12 public exam.

Suits

  • Class 10 and Class 12 students sitting the DGE public exams
  • CBSE, ICSE and ISC students who need one subject steadied
  • NEET and JEE aspirants who want a second pass over what coaching covered
  • Adults working along the OMR who want spoken English or IELTS
  • Children in Classes 1 to 5 building reading and number sense

How a Chennai learner finds a tutor

Four steps, from the message you send us to the evening the lessons settle into a routine.

01

Tell us what the learner needs

Name the class, the board, the subject and your locality. Add whether you want the tutor at your house or online, and which evenings are free once school and coaching are done.

02

We look for a tutor who teaches that

A Class 12 physics tutor for the state board and one for ISC are two different people. We look for someone who teaches your exact syllabus and can reach your part of Chennai, or teach the learner online.

03

Sit through the trial lesson

The first lesson is a trial. Watch how the tutor opens a chapter the learner finds hard, and how the learner answers back. The lessons carry on only when that hour works.

04

Settle days and timings

Edutara sets what an hour costs and confirms it at enrolment. Days, timings and whether you meet at home or on a screen are worked out with the tutor, and Edutara bills the lessons, pays the tutor and stays in touch to keep the match running.

Where we look for tutors across Chennai

The localities learners name when they write to us, from the northern suburbs to the far end of the IT corridor.

According to the Greater Chennai Corporation, the city is divided into 15 zones and 200 wards covering about 426 sq km, and the metropolitan area reaches well past that into Tambaram, Guduvancheri and Kelambakkam. A tutor travels inside one part of all that, so the clearer you are about your locality, the faster the search goes.

  1. A planned grid of wide roads and parks in central Chennai, thick with schools and coaching centres. Students here often keep a home tutor for the one subject that is slipping and take coaching classes for the rest.

How an Edutara match works in Chennai

Four things that are true of every match we make in this city, and of the tutors we look for.

One tutor, one learner

Every lesson has one teacher and one student in the room. The hour goes on the learner's own doubts, and on the questions a crowded classroom never gets around to.

A tutor from your side of the city

We look for someone who can reach your locality on a working evening. In a city where the OMR and GST Road fill up after six, the distance between two addresses decides whether the lesson happens at all.

The trial lesson comes first

You watch the tutor teach before anything is fixed. If that hour does not suit the learner, tell us and Edutara finds a new tutor at no charge, for the state board, CBSE or ICSE alike.

Tutors join without paying

Applying to tutor with Edutara is free and stays free. We look for college students, graduates, retired teachers and teachers outside the school system, since the RTE Act, 2009, Section 28 bars serving school teachers from private tuition.

Questions Chennai learners ask

About boards, exam dates, travel across the city and how the fees work.

The three that Chennai schools run on. The Tamil Nadu state board follows the common Samacheer Kalvi syllabus brought in by the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act, 2010, which put government schools, matriculation schools, Anglo-Indian schools and oriental schools on one set of textbooks. CBSE schools follow the CBSE syllabus and its own exam pattern. ICSE and ISC schools are affiliated to CISCE. Tell us which one the learner studies, because a tutor who teaches Samacheer Kalvi physics and one who teaches ISC physics prepare for very different papers.

A guide for learners in Chennai

Home tuition in Chennai: what to know before you start

Chennai schools sit on three systems. The Tamil Nadu state board teaches the common Samacheer Kalvi syllabus, brought in by the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act, 2010, which ended the old split between matriculation, Anglo-Indian, oriental and government school syllabuses and put them all on one set of books. CBSE schools follow their own syllabus and exam pattern. ICSE and ISC schools are affiliated to CISCE, and their papers ask for longer written answers than most state board papers do.

For a learner choosing a tutor, the board decides more than the textbook. The state board rewards answers written in the shape the board's own key expects. CBSE papers turn on competency-based questions and a tighter marking scheme. ISC expects sustained writing. A tutor who has taught one of these for a few years reads the question paper the way the examiner wrote it, and that is the difference a learner feels by the second month.

  • Name the board in your first message; it narrows the search immediately.
  • Ask a prospective tutor which board's papers they have taught most recently.
  • A student moving school mid-year may need a term of catching up on the new syllabus.

Tamil Nadu is unusual among the big states in admitting students to engineering on school marks alone. The Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Educational Institutions Act, 2006 set admission on cut-off marks derived from the Class 12 board result, and TNEA, the state's single-window counselling, works out a cutoff on a 200-point scale: the full maths mark, plus half of physics and half of chemistry. A student who wants a seat at a well-known Chennai college is therefore chasing marks in three papers written over about three weeks in March.

That shapes how tuition is used here. A Chennai student aiming at engineering usually asks first for a maths tutor who can get the board answers clean, since maths carries full weight in the cutoff. Students who also want JEE keep a second track running, because JEE Main and JEE Advanced test the same chapters in a different way. Where both are in play, the sensible plan is board accuracy first, from January, and JEE practice in the months before and after.

  • The TNEA cutoff is maths in full, plus half of physics and half of chemistry.
  • There is no separate state engineering entrance test in Tamil Nadu.
  • A learner aiming at JEE as well needs the two syllabuses planned together, early.

Medical admission is the one place where a Chennai student cannot rely on board marks. NEET-UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency in a single offline session, and every MBBS and BDS seat in the state goes through it. NTA announces the date, the application window and the result schedule for each cycle on its own site, so a student planning a repeat year should work from that year's notice and treat the previous calendar as history.

The state has pushed back for a decade. The Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Bill, 2021 asked for an exemption and a return to Class 12 marks with a normalisation method; the President withheld assent, and the state moved the Supreme Court. What is in force today is a different law: the 2020 Act that reserves 7.5 per cent of state medical seats, horizontally, for candidates who studied Classes 6 to 12 in government schools, upheld by the Madras High Court. For a Chennai student in a private school, none of this changes the work: NEET decides the seat, and biology, physics and chemistry have to be carried alongside the Class 12 board papers.

  • NEET-UG dates are announced by NTA each cycle; check the official site.
  • The government school reservation is horizontal and applies to state quota seats.
  • Board revision and NEET practice are planned together, because March and the NEET session sit close.

The Tamil Nadu school year opens in June. For 2026-27 the state reopened schools on 4 June, having moved the date from 1 June because of the heat, and the first term runs to the quarterly exams before the Ayudha Puja and Deepavali holidays. Half-yearly exams fall in December. That is also when the northeast monsoon is on Chennai, the season that brings most of the city's rain, and rain holidays can knock days out of a term at exactly the point when revision should be starting.

From January the public exam calendar takes over. Practical exams for the state board come in February, the written papers in March and early April, and results follow in May. CBSE has added a second Class 10 board exam from 2026: the first sitting in February and March is compulsory, and an optional second sitting in May lets a student improve up to three subjects. Learners who plan tuition around this usually start the extra hours in the middle of the first term, so the tutor knows the learner well before the December exams, and the January to March stretch goes on past papers.

  • June to September: build the habit, cover what school is teaching now.
  • October to December: quarterly and half-yearly exams, with rain days to absorb.
  • January to March: past papers, timed answers, practicals.
  • May: results, and for CBSE Class 10 the optional second sitting.

Chennai stretches from Thiruvottiyur in the north to Sholinganallur in the south, and the built-up area runs on well past Tambaram and Kelambakkam. Two corridors carry most of the newer housing. Rajiv Gandhi Salai, which everybody calls the OMR, runs south from Madhya Kailash through Perungudi, Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur to Siruseri. The Grand Southern Trunk Road runs south-west through Pallavaram, Chromepet and Tambaram towards Guduvancheri, with the Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu suburban trains alongside it.

A tutor travelling across those corridors in the evening loses an hour easily, which is why we look for someone on your side of the city first. The metro helps inside the older city, and Chennai Metro Rail is building its Phase 2 corridors, including the stretch through Porur and Poonamallee. Where travel still does not work, online lessons do, and many Chennai learners end up with a mix: the tutor at home on two evenings, online on the third.

  • Name your locality and the nearest landmark when you write to us.
  • Evening slots after 7 p.m. are the hardest to fill on the OMR and GST Road.
  • Weekend morning lessons are easier to arrange across longer distances.

Tamil Nadu teaches two languages in school, Tamil and English, and the State Education Policy released in August 2025 reaffirmed that formula along with the 10+2 structure. So a Chennai student usually grows up with Tamil at home and in one school subject, and English as the medium for everything else. Where those two are out of step, marks in science and social science fall for reasons that have nothing to do with the subject.

Home tuition is good at that particular repair, because one tutor can explain the chapter in Tamil and then sit with the learner while the answer is written in English. The same need turns up again after school. College students and adults working in the offices along the OMR, in Guindy and around Ambattur ask for spoken English, and those applying abroad ask for IELTS in the Academic or General Training format. Chennai also has learners who pick up Hindi privately, because a state board school teaches Tamil and English alone.

  • Say which language you want the explaining done in; it is a real choice here.
  • Spoken English and IELTS lessons are for adults as much as for students.
  • A bilingual tutor helps most in Classes 6 to 10, when subject vocabulary arrives.
