What is home tuition in Guwahati?

Home tuition in Guwahati means a tutor comes to your flat or house and teaches one learner at the study table, at an hour that fits around school, a coaching batch and the evening crawl on G.S. Road. Learners in this city study under three systems at once: the Assam State School Education Board, which took over the work of SEBA and AHSEC in September 2024, along with CBSE schools and a smaller number of ICSE and ISC schools. A tutor at home teaches to whichever syllabus your school follows, explains in Assamese, Hindi or English as the learner prefers, and moves the lesson online on days when Rukminigaon, Hatigaon or the lanes off Zoo Road are waterlogged.

What it gives the learner

  • The whole hour belongs to one learner, so a doubt from Tuesday's class is cleared on Tuesday.
  • Teaching follows your own school's syllabus, whether that is ASSEB Division I, CBSE or ICSE.
  • Timings bend around Guwahati school hours and the slow stretch between Six Mile and Ganeshguri.
  • A flooded evening moves the same lesson online, and the week stays on track.
  • Explanations can move between Assamese, Hindi and English as the learner follows them.

Suits

  • Class 10 students sitting the HSLC papers under ASSEB Division I
  • Class 12 science students carrying HS theory, practicals and NEET or JEE together
  • Children in Classes 1 to 5 whose reading and number work needs steadying
  • Adults working in offices around Ulubari who want to speak English with ease

How a Guwahati learner finds a tutor

Four steps, from the request you send us to the evening the lessons settle into a routine.

01

Tell us the class and the locality

Say the class, the board (ASSEB, CBSE or ICSE), the subject and where you live: Six Mile, Silpukhuri, Maligaon or across the river at Amingaon. Home or online is your choice, and it can change later.

02

Edutara looks for that exact tutor

We search for someone who already teaches that subject at that level and can reach your part of the city at the hour you want, so a Class 12 chemistry request does not end up with a general science tutor.

A few days
03

Judge the first chapter together

The tutor takes one chapter with the learner, and the learner judges the way it lands. If that style of explaining does not suit, now or later in the session, we find a tutor who fits better, free of charge.

The days and the hour with the tutor

You and the tutor fix the days and the hour, and Edutara confirms the fee and bills it monthly. Most learners here take evening slots after school and add hours as the February papers come close.

Where we look for tutors

Where a home tutor can reach you in Guwahati

From the riverfront wards at Panbazar to the southern colonies at Lokhra, and over the Saraighat bridges to Amingaon.

Guwahati is laid out in a thin line between the Brahmaputra and the hills, so travel here runs mostly east and west along a handful of roads. Your request names the locality, and we look for a tutor who can reach it at the hour you want, which matters most on weekday evenings when G.S. Road and the Six Mile stretch move slowly.

  1. Dispur

The seat of the Assam government, ringed by staff quarters, schools and the entrance coaching offices strung along G.S. Road near Christian Basti. Lessons here usually begin once the office traffic has thinned.

  3. Chandmari

Older residential Guwahati above the Zoo Road stretch, thick with schools, tuition rooms and bus routes. A tutor can often walk from one lesson to the next here, clear of the traffic.

How an Edutara match works in Guwahati

From the first message to a weekly routine on either bank of the Brahmaputra, every Guwahati match is built in these steps.

One learner, one tutor

The hour is built around one learner's syllabus and one learner's doubts. A question asked halfway through a chapter gets answered there, which a hall of forty cannot manage.

You decide who keeps teaching

The first lesson shows you how this tutor explains. If that way of explaining stops suiting your learner at any stage, Edutara finds a new tutor without charging you for the change.

Tutors who can actually reach you

A tutor in Maligaon matched to a learner in Panjabari produces a lesson that keeps getting cancelled. We look within a distance that survives a wet Guwahati evening.

Home or online, switched as needed

When water stands in the lanes off Zoo Road or a road is dug up for drainage work, the same tutor can take that evening's lesson online and come to the house the next week.

Who the tutors are

Edutara looks to people who teach away from a school payroll: students in the city's colleges, recent graduates and retired teachers. Section 28 of the RTE Act, 2009 keeps serving school teachers out of private tuition.

A fee Edutara sets

Edutara sets the lesson fee, shares it at enrolment and bills it by invoice, and it pays the tutor for every lesson. A tutor pays nothing at any stage.

Questions Guwahati learners ask

About boards, timings, the monsoon, fees and how a match is made in this city.

Yes. Assam's school board is now the Assam State School Education Board, which came into being on 13 September 2024 and carries the old SEBA as Division I for the HSLC examination and the old AHSEC as Division II for Higher Secondary. When you send a request, name the board your school follows, because the question pattern and the prescribed books differ. A tutor who has taught HSLC maths for years knows where that paper usually pushes hardest, and a CBSE tutor knows the same about the Class 10 CBSE paper.

A guide for Guwahati learners

Home tuition in Guwahati: what shapes a school year here

Three school systems run side by side in this city. The state system is now under the Assam State School Education Board, created by the Assam State School Education Board Act, 2024 and functioning from 13 September 2024. It absorbed the Board of Secondary Education, Assam, which continues as Division I and conducts the HSLC examination at the end of Class 10, and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, which continues as Division II and conducts the Higher Secondary examination at the end of Class 12.

Alongside it, CBSE is strongly represented in Guwahati. Don Bosco High School at Panbazar has taught here since 1948, and PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya Khanapara, established in 1966, is the oldest Kendriya Vidyalaya in the Northeast. ICSE and ISC schools are fewer in number, with Sanskriti The Gurukul on the edge of the city among those affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations. A tutor coming to your home has to know which of these three the learner sits, because the question papers, the prescribed texts and the marking differ.

  • ASSEB Division I conducts HSLC; Division II conducts Higher Secondary
  • SEBA and AHSEC are the former names, still used in conversation and on old documents
  • Name your school's board in the request so the match is made against the right syllabus

A Guwahati school year turns on February. In 2026 the HSLC theory papers were held from 10 to 27 February, with Class 10 practicals in January, and the Higher Secondary final examination ran from 11 February to 16 March with second year practicals from 27 January to 7 February. Results followed in April, HSLC on 10 April and Higher Secondary on 28 April. The board publishes each routine several months ahead, so the 2027 dates are the ones ASSEB announces and nothing should be assumed before that.

For a learner, the practical consequence is that December and January are already inside the examination season. A tutor brought in during December can revise and drill past papers, and little more. The learners who use home tuition well start in the middle of the preceding year, finish the syllabus once by about November, and keep the last two months for writing full papers under the clock.

  • Practicals come first, in January, before the theory papers
  • Class 12 science learners carry HS practicals and NEET or JEE preparation in the same weeks
  • Check the routine on the board's own site when it is published

The entrance coaching trade in Guwahati has settled along the G.S. Road corridor, thickest around Christian Basti, Ganeshguri and Dispur, with more classes in Chandmari and near Six Mile. Students come in from across Assam and from the other states of the Northeast, because this is where the classes, the hostels and the libraries are. The batches are large by design, and the calendar they follow belongs to the institute.

That is where home tuition finds its work. A learner sitting in the fourth row of a hundred-strong batch cannot stop the class to say that the last step of a derivation did not land. A tutor at home goes back to that step, and also keeps the school syllabus alive, which matters because board marks decide a great deal in Assam even for a learner aiming at JEE or NEET. Guwahati also gives the learner something to aim at within sight: IIT Guwahati sits at Amingaon across the river, and Gauhati Medical College and Hospital at Bhangagarh is a few kilometres from most of the coaching offices.

  • Coaching batches run to the institute's calendar; a home tutor runs to your learner's
  • Board syllabus and entrance preparation are planned together, in one timetable

Guwahati sits in a bowl between hills with the Brahmaputra on one side, and the Bharalu carries the city's runoff into the river. When a heavy spell of rain arrives, water stands in the low colonies within an hour: Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Hatigaon, the stretches off Zoo Road and parts of Beltola are the names that recur in reporting by The Assam Tribune and The Sentinel after every such spell. The season runs from the pre-monsoon showers of April through to September.

For tuition this is a scheduling problem more than anything else. A tutor who lives twenty minutes away in dry weather may need two hours on a flooded evening, and a lesson cancelled in the middle of the syllabus is hard to recover. Two habits help. Match within a short radius so the journey is short to begin with, and agree at the outset that a flooded evening turns into an online hour on the same day, so the week keeps its lesson.

  • April to September is the wet stretch, starting with pre-monsoon showers
  • Keep a standing arrangement to shift a flooded evening online
  • A tutor from your own locality loses the least time to water and traffic

Three Bihus mark the Assamese year, and two of them fall where they touch a study plan. The Assam government's holiday list for 2026 places Magh Bihu in the middle of January and Bohag Bihu from 14 to 16 April, with Kati Bihu in October. Bohag Bihu is the large one, and the city empties towards family homes in the districts for several days around it.

Magh Bihu is the one to plan for. It arrives just as Class 10 and Class 12 practicals are being held and the theory papers are three or four weeks away, so a learner in an examination year usually keeps a lesson or two running through the break. Bohag Bihu falls at the other end, when the new session is only settling, which makes it an easy time to take a longer pause. Tell your tutor a week in advance either way, so the timetable can be adjusted in good time.

  • Magh Bihu lands inside the practical examination stretch
  • Bohag Bihu, in mid-April, sits at the start of the session and is easier to take off
  • Agree the break with the tutor ahead of time and reschedule the missed hours

Assamese is the language of the street and of most homes in Guwahati, with Bengali, Hindi, Bodo and Nepali spoken widely across the city's neighbourhoods. A great many learners from these homes go to English medium schools, and the gap between the language a learner thinks in and the language the answer script demands is where a lot of lost marks sit. A learner can understand photosynthesis perfectly in Assamese and still write four marks worth of it in English.

A home tutor is well placed to close that gap, because the tutor can explain the idea in the language the learner is fluent in and then rehearse the answer in the words the board expects. When you send a request, name the languages spoken at home along with the medium of the school. It is a small detail that changes which tutor is the right one.

  • Say the home language and the school medium in the request
  • Understanding a concept and writing it to the board's terms are two separate skills

The city proper lies on the south bank, and North Guwahati faces it from the other side. The Saraighat Bridge, the first rail and road bridge over the Brahmaputra in Assam, joins Pandu to Amingaon, and the New Saraighat Bridge beside it carries road traffic. Ferries also run from the ghats near Panbazar. IIT Guwahati is at Amingaon, so there is a steady flow of people in both directions, and there are far more households on the south bank than tutors on the north.

Within the south bank the geography is simply long. Maligaon and Jalukbari sit at the western end, Narengi and Noonmati at the eastern, and the whole city is threaded by a few roads that slow to a crawl between about five and eight in the evening. This is why a request that names your locality is worth more than one that says Guwahati. Matching inside Beltola, or inside the Chandmari and Silpukhuri belt, gives a tutor a journey that a weekday evening will not ruin.

  • North bank learners do best with a north bank tutor, or with online lessons
  • Name your locality along with the city when you send a request
  • Evening traffic on the main roads is the real limit on how far a tutor will travel
